Description

About Us:

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation science and applied conservation. ZSL’s mission is to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. This is realised by carrying out field conservation and research in over 50 countries across the globe and through education and awareness-raising at our two zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, inspiring people to take conservation action.

With global biodiversity in rapid decline and a growing number of species on the brink of extinction, advances in technology are becoming ever more important in helping us to solve these conservation challenges. ZSL is working with a range of expert partners to design, develop, manufacture and deploy innovative and integrated technological tools that will revolutionise wildlife surveillance, biodiversity monitoring and behaviour change through digital communications. These technologies may be deployed directly by ZSL or shared/sold with trusted third party organisations. Through using technology we can more efficiently and effectively collect, process and analyse data at different spatial and temporal scales. This can better enable us to measure species and habitat status, identify threats, develop mitigation strategies and test their effectiveness.

Overview of role:

ZSL is seeking a Conservation Technology Unit (CTU) Programme Manager, based at ZSL London Zoo, who will be required to lead a team of 3-4 people and will report directly to the Director of Conservation. The role will involve:

  • Maintaining and developing the existing lead projects (Instant Wild citizen science App and  Instant Detect, the remote camera trap and sensing system using satellite communication).
  • Providing overall support on collaborative projects such as SMART (Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool) and United for Wildlife Technology for Conservation Initiative,
  • Linking the conservation and technology community together to collaboratively develop and implement technology solutions to address conservation challenges.
  • Being responsible for driving innovation and identifying funding to support this.

The successful candidate will be:

  • Educated to master’s degree or equivalent in related discipline or have equivalent level of work experience.
  • Independently driven and show initiative; with strong administrative skills;
  • Current or previous staff management experience with the ability to critically assess and propose alternative course of action.
  • Able to demonstrate excellent inter-personal skills and have good time and organisational management skills.
  • Proven grant-writing and report-writing ability.

Please Note: The position is based at ZSL’s offices in London but may involve significant travel abroad to remote field sites to assist in trials and implementation of tools. The position may also require weekend and out of office hours.

To Apply:

Applicants should send their completed Equality of Opportunity Monitoring Form, CV, and a covering letter detailing relevant experience and skills and stating why they want the position, by email to ZSL’s HR Department (hr@zsl.org). We regret that we will only be able to contact applicants who have been selected for interview.

Closing Date: Midnight Sunday 17th May 2015

The Zoological Society of London is a charity registered in England and Wales: no. 208728.
