Job summary

We recognise the challenges that people with (multiple) protected characteristics may experience on the job market and in their career progression. We are fully committed to being an inclusive employer and ensuring equal opportunities. We are keen to make our workforce as diverse as possible, and we hope to attract applications from underrepresented groups, including ethnic minorities, people with a disability, and people with gender diverse identities.

Are you passionate about addressing sustainability challenges and reaching Net Zero?

Do you have operational delivery and people management experience?

If so, we are looking for two highly motivated people to lead the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation Unit and we'd like you to apply!

Job description

We have two roles available, Head of Compliance and Head of the Centre of Excellence within our Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) Unit.

The RTFO is one of the Government’s most important routes for reducing emissions from transport. It ensures that all fuel supplied into and used in the UK has a certain amount of renewable fuel mixed in. It is responsible for reducing transport emissions by a third.

As the UK’s renewable transport fuels regulator, the RTFO Unit oversees the operation of the RTFO. It is a world-leading centre of expertise on the environmental sustainability of low carbon fuels. The scheme’s value was £1.6bn in 2020 and provided greenhouse gas savings of 5,244 kt CO2e, equivalent to the annual emissions of 2.5 million average cars.

In this role, no one day will be the same. One morning you could be resolving a complex sustainability query from a fuel supplier while in the afternoon you could be developing options and briefing ministers on how to use the scheme to encourage use of new emerging fuels such as hydrogen. The next day you could be presenting to international renewable fuel regulators.  All whilst leading a combined team of eight full time equivalent staff.

This is a challenging and exciting area of work. You will join the team at a critical time for transport decarbonisation. We are growing the RTFO scheme, looking to introduce a specific mandate for Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), and reviewing how we better incentivise the use of novel fuel types like renewable hydrogen.

Our team is based in Hastings, where we are continuing to grow our presence, however you do have the option to be based in London, Leeds or Birmingham for these roles.

Closing date: 11:55pm, Monday 13th February 2023.
