Position Overview
The Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Association seeks a Program Officer to implement and help expand the world’s largest voluntary greenhouse gas (GHG) program. The successful candidate will provide guidance and support to a wide array of VCS stakeholders, manage the development of new VCS methodologies and provide various research tasks as needed. The role also requires excellent communication skills to assist with a variety of outreach functions.
Background on the VCS Association
Launched in November 2007, the VCS is the leading global GHG standard and program in the voluntary carbon market. Increasingly, emerging GHG programs around the world look to the VCS for best practices and guidance as they develop their own systems. Since its inception, more than 1,000 projects around the world have relied on the VCS Program to issue more than 120 million Verified Carbon Units (VCUs).
Job Description
The VCS Association is seeking a Program Officer to support a variety of operational and technical aspects of the VCS Program. Principal tasks and responsibilities will include, at a minimum, the following:
- Provide guidance and support to project developers, methodology developers, validation/verification bodies, registries and other stakeholdersusing the VCS.
- Manage methodologies being developed under the VCS methodology approval process.
- Research contemporary issues and relevant policies affecting the voluntary carbon market and emerging government programs.
- Support communications functions as a liaison between program team and communications staff, assisting in production of marketing brochures, press materials, newsletters and website content.
- Participate in conferences and other industry events.
- Assist other parts of the organization, as needed.
Required Knowledge, Experience and Skills
- University education, in relevant field.
- Understanding of GHG concepts, including voluntary and compliance carbon markets, the development of projects and methodologies, and the role of validation/verification bodies.
- Fluency in English is essential; another UN language would be considered an asset.
- Excellent writing and communication skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other related programs.
- Familiarity with content management, email marketing, and contact database systems.
- Experience with graphic design, video editing and website coding would be considered an asset.
