The U.S. office of the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) is seeking an experienced program officer to develop and implement WSPA's international and U.S. regional campaigns to achieve specific animal welfare objectives through lobbying, public awareness activities and member society relations.

WSPA is an international federation of more than 800 member animal welfare societies operating in more than 140 countries. Its current campaigns address factory farming, long distance transport of farmed animals, wildlife trade, whaling and marine mammal captivity, and a Universal Declaration for Animal Welfare.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Implement and develop effective and innovative campaigns to achieve specific animal welfare objectives.
  • Take part in public speaking engagements, presentations and media interviews.
  • Represent WSPA at meetings, conferences and other public settings.
  • Lobby U.S. and international public officials on animal welfare initiatives.
  • Research and write relevant campaign and public education materials.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required; degree in animal science or public policy preferred.
  • 2 to 5 years advocacy experience required.
  • General knowledge of animal protection issues strongly recommended; knowledge of wildlife and marine mammal issues helpful.
  • Foreign language a plus.
  • Some travel, both domestic and international, required (approximately four weeks/year).
