Job Title: Program Assistant, Global Population and Environment Department: Conservation/Washington, DC Reports To: Global Population and Environment Representative Context: Provides program, issue and administrative support functions for public education, legislative and volunteer engagement. Scope: Works collaboratively with other staff and volunteers to plan, organize and implement the education and public engagement efforts of the Sierra Club on its Global Population and Environment Program, and provides assistance to various regional efforts. Regularly works outside of the office and without direct supervision to communicate with officials, the media, volunteers, and the public. Works with professional staff in editing, writing, researching, and coordinating functions. Job Activities: 1. Program Assistant assists in the development and implementation of public education and outreach efforts:
2. Provides administrative support for office as assigned by supervisor. 3. Informs and meets with volunteers, congressional/ administration staff, Sierra Club staff, public and the media on population, reproductive health, and environmental issues. 4. Collaborates externally with partners including national and international sexual and reproductive health, youth organizing, conservation, development, and human rights organizations through coalition meetings, co-sponsored events, community tours, and legislative initiatives; and internally with communications, digital strategies, organizing department and other capacities of the Sierra Club as needed. 4. Keeps leaders up to date on current happenings and information regarding their issues. Communicates with issue and national committee volunteer leaders and staff; coordinates conference calls and meetings; prepares and distributes issue materials. 5. Prepares briefing materials, schedules meetings with reporters, legislative and administrative officials. 6. Maintains and updates appropriate information and organizational lists as required. This could include media, legislative and administration databases. 7. Performs miscellaneous duties as required. Knowledge & Skills: -- Demonstrated commitment to environmental protection & reproductive health and rights. -- Excellent writing and editing skills. -- Strong verbal communication and presentation skills. -- Strong organizational skills and ability to work effectively in fast paced office. -- Ability to interact cooperatively and effectively with public, staff and volunteers. -- Proficient computer skills and working knowledge of MS PowerPoint, Word and Excel is required. This position is represented by a collective bargaining unit and is subject to the terms and conditions of the contract between Sierra Club and John Muir Local.
