Project Description
The Energy Systems Evaluation Unit of the Institute, comprising about 30
staff, supports the development, implementation and monitoring of the
European Energy Technology Policy – a key pillar for an integrated Energy
and Climate Policy for Europe -, through its lead function in SETIS, the
information system of the European Strategic Energy Technology Plan
(setis.ec.europa.eu).

The ESE Unit is looking for a highly motivated and dynamic colleague to
contribute to its work in supporting the Commission’s activities in the area
of carbon capture and storage technologies in the frame of the EU’s
Strategic Energy Technology Plan and in particular on CO2 storage. 
The tasks will include:
• Collection of  data on CO2 storage capacity across Europe and their 
interpretation in a comparable manner
• Development of a methodology for estimating CO2 storage capacity
in depleted hydrocarbon fields and aquifers
• development of a GIS-based interactive database of CO2 storage
capacity in Europe, that will be hosted by the SETIS website and
provide a continuously updated European CO2 storage atlas
• Development of a methodology for reviewing CO2 storage permit
applications
• Analysis of risk of leakage from CO2 storage sites
The drafting of reports and scientific publications are an integral part of the
required tasks. 
This fellowship requires dynamism and initiative and it offers a number of
varied and interesting tasks in a friendly and well integrated Unit to a

Qualifications/Expertise needed
University degree in geology, mining, petroleum engineering or a related
discipline complemented with a doctoral degree or a minimum 5-year
research experience after the 1st university degree giving access to PhD
studies in the area of assessment of underground geological structures. Good
knowledge of English. Knowledge of GIS would be regarded as a asset.
Good drafting skills and synthesis ability, particularly in English, supported
by a publications list are essential; any other languages would be regarded as
an additional asset.
