Description

The Maritime Affairs Unit of the Joint Research Centre is involved in a number of research and policy support activities for the Common Fisheries Policy. In fisheries economic affairs, JRC's FISHREG action (http://fishreg.jrc.ec.europa.eu/) provides coordination, the secretariat and scientific input to STECF (Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries). FISHREG collects annually and analyzes data on the socio-economic performance of the EU fishing fleet, the EU fish processing sector and, starting in 2011, also of aquaculture. FISHREG co-authors the Annual Economic Reports on the European Fishing Fleet and the European Fish Processing sector. A similar report on the economics of the EU aquaculture sector is planned to be produced annually, starting in 2011. In addition to EU level trends and drivers of change, it is envisaged to include in future reports also economic performance projections.

FISHREG wishes to develop further its in-house economic analysis capacity for all three sectors. FISHREG's outputs will take the form of economic advice to policy makers, improvements of bio-economic modelling capacity, evaluations of the economic dimensions of long-term management plans, economic impact assessments of policy options, as well as economic advice for the Common Market Organization for fisheries and aquaculture products. Other contributions that may be needed include assessments of optimal enforcement strategies for specific EU fisheries and options to address the problem of rising fuel costs. Publishing in the peer-reviewed literature and contributing to collaborative research projects are parts of the job.

Required profile:

Fisheries economist with a PhD degree or 5-years of relevant research experience. Significant international experience with economic advice in fisheries is required - 5 years of hands-on, proven experience in economic analysis and modelling of fisheries economic data is required.

Strong analytical skills are necessary. Authoring the annual reports requires excellent writing skills in the English language and strong capacity to communicate with experts and policy makers. A good record of publications in the peer-reviewed literature is required.
