The Policy Adviser will maximise the senator’s effectiveness in Parliament and support his media and community engagement efforts. The person appointed may accompany the senator on parliamentary business, public engagements and community meetings as required. This position will involve regular travel to Canberra and irregular hours.

Roles and Responsibilities

  1. Manage all parliamentary activity (legislation advice, prepare private senator’s bills and amendments to bills, write policy briefs and proposals for the senator and Party Room, prepare for committee work and write reports, prepare for Senate Estimates questioning, research and write motions, research and write speech notes, support the work of parliamentary groups and associations, support the Office Manager to respond to correspondence about parliamentary work).
  2. Advise and support the senator in negotiations with government and shadow ministerial offices.
  3. Develop policy initiatives in the senator’s portfolios.
  4. Organise and attend meetings with lobbyists and constituents in key portfolio areas.
  5. Support the senator when travelling for Senate Committee inquiries and community visits.
  6. Manage key stakeholder relationships in areas of priority.
  7. Manage Parliament House office and senator’s parliamentary responsibilities during sitting weeks.
  8. Liaise with Campaigns Adviser to prepare campaign materials.
  9. Provide policy content for media releases.
  10. Other tasks as directed by the senator.

 

A salary within the range $43,942–68,874pa will be determined commensurate with relevant skills and experience. In addition, an allowance in the range $3475–$24,330 is payable in lieu of overtime.
