The Gardens and Landscape Team, part of the Curatorial Department, is responsible for the curation and supporting the care and management of gardens, designed landscapes and the setting of monuments in the care of English Heritage. This is realised by the undertaking and commissioning of research, developing and advising on gardens and landscape policy, management and practice, and supporting operational teams by providing support, guidance, advice and training.

The post will work closely with colleagues across English Heritage and Historic England to lead and champion the effective use and recording of plant records, and manage the effective team working between the various groups, including IT and GIS teams, Head Gardeners and garden teams including volunteers, Regional Landscape Managers, Curators, Historians and Interpretation Managers.

The plant records database and mapping systems currently uses IrisBG to manage a comprehensive set of botanical collection data, including plant history and related information such as taxa with synonyms, authors, images, collectors, contacts, etc. It utilises a mapping module and connects with Esri ArcGIS / ArcGIS Server WMS services to record and display the location of garden areas and the plants within them.

The post will involve travelling throughout England to support the compilation and curation of plant records and provide support and advice to regional staff.

The Plant Records Manager will lead and manage the operation and use of the plant records database and mapping systems, with particular reference to data integrity, in-house training and software support, accurate recording and curation of plant collections (including tree health and safety data), and the wide use of plant records information within English Heritage and for the public.
