Position Description
Responsibilities of the Climate Fellow include, but are not limited to, working on a daily basis with designated counterpart staff in the Philippine Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA) Resource Data Analysis Branch (RDAB) to:
- Support the application of advanced techniques in land cover mapping and monitoring to improve the efficiency and accuracy of NAMRIA’s land cover maps;
- Contribute to NAMRIA’s research agenda by working with NAMRIA to explore new data sources and methodologies that would enhance the accuracy of their land cover maps;
- Support the use and analysis of land cover maps by FMB to produce forest carbon estimates and analyze changes in forest cover over time;
- Liaise with CCC on issues related to forest mapping and monitoring for REDD+ purposes;
- Contribute to the standardization of mapping protocols and collaborative interagency processes leading to more effective and transparent forest monitoring and management, in line with NAMRIA’s Philippines Geoportal System;
- Identify appropriate USFS technical assistance on forest mapping and monitoring and help coordinate short-term technical visits, study tours, and other activities;
- Identify relevant training workshops for NAMRIA and/or FMB and contribute substantively to the preparation and execution of the workshops;
- Identify partnership opportunities with other organizations in the Philippines that can support related capacity building and trainings for NAMRIA and FMB;
- Plan and execute communications and prepare reports on the status of progress of work;
- Participate in U.S. government-coordinated outreach and related activities.
Qualifications
The Climate Fellow should have the following skills and experience.
- A master's degree or doctorate (preferred) in natural resource management, environmental science, or a related field, with a research emphasis on remote sensing and GIS;
- Proven experience in applying remote sensing technologies for land cover mapping and land cover/land use change estimation;
- International work experience in a natural resource or environment related field, preferably related to forest monitoring and/or REDD+;
- Knowledge of core technical and policy issues pertinent to the development and implementation of REDD+ policies and programs, including familiarity with IPCC Good Practice Guidance;
- Demonstrated ability to provide technical coordination and leadership with a broad range of interested parties and varying capacity levels;
- Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical partners;
- Demonstrated ability to be adaptable and flexible in a dynamic work environment.
