The Fuel Cells and Solid State Chemistry Division at Risø DTU is among the world’s research leaders in solid oxide electrolysis and fuel cells – a technology for clean and efficient conversion of electricity to fuels and fuels to electricity. In addition we have activities within a number of related topics in energy conversion and functional ceramics.

Project description
The PhD scholarship is part of a Swiss – Danish cooperation project between the company Climeworks LLC in Zurich, the Professorship in Renewable Energy Carriers at ETH Zurich and The Fuel Cells and Solid State Chemistry Division at Risoe DTU. The objective of the project is to combine the CO2 capture from air with the co-electrolysis of CO2 and H2O using renewable electricity, to produce CO and H2 for further processing into CO2-neutral liquid hydrocarbon fuels. The first phase of the PhD project will be to perform analyses to a find suitable integration technology, and the second phase is an experimental proof of concept.

Qualifications

  • Master degree in  engineering, materials science, physics, chemistry or similar
  • preferably a strong background in electrochemistry and  catalysis
  • ability to work independently, to plan and carry out complicated tasks, and to be a part of a large, dynamic group
  • good communication skills in English, both written and spoken

Approval and Enrolment 
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see theDTU PhD Guide.

Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.
