Description |
Initially seen as a way forward to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, to increase energy security and to foster rural development, the opportunities and risks of a globally expanding bioenergy sector are now a subject of great controversy. In this context, the multidisciplinary research project BioenergyPlanet studies the prospects and consequences of global bioenergy production. We are inviting applications for a PhD position (m/f, TV-L 13-O/2, full-time, ref. tbe/01) to commence as soon as possible. The position is available for an initial period to 31.12.2011 with a possible extension of one year. We are looking for a highly motivated young researcher with a background in geoecology, geography, plant sciences, hydrology, geoinformatics or a related discipline. The task is to quantify the impacts of expanding human land use on biodiversity and natural ecosystems under a changing climate, using a dynamic global vegetation model. The candidate should have skills in data analysis and/or programming (preferably in C), written and oral presentation skills, fluency in English, and the willingness to work in an interdisciplinary team. Knowledge of the Linux operating system and experiences with GIS are advantageous. PIK values diversity and encourages applications from women, disabled people, and minority groups. Applications including CV and motivation (written in German or English) should arrive at PIK before 23 December 2009. Later applications will be considered until the position is filled.
