Description

The Transatlantic Ocean System Science & Technology graduate school has 11 competitive PhD Fellowship positions at Dalhousie University and the University of New Brunswick.

TOSST is a joint, transatlantic graduate research school linking two major centres of ocean research; Maritime Canada and northern Germany. TOSST complements the existing German-funded Helmholtz Ocean System Science and Technology (HOSST – http://www.geomar.de/studieren/phd-hosst/) research school in Kiel, Germany.

Students have the opportunity to participate in summer schools located in Halifax, Kiel, and Cape Verde; take courses focusing on business development, management skills, and leadership; complete internships in industry, government, and NGOs; and conduct interdisciplinary research in state of the art facilities with co-supervisors in both countries.

Research will address key issues facing the North Atlantic under three distinct themes: Seafloor Structures, 4D water mass dynamics, and Ecosystem Hotspots. Trainees will:

(A) participate in summer schools in Halifax, Kiel, and Cape Verde and receive hands-on training in different aspects of marine science by experts in the field
(B) be offered intensive courses on business development, management skills, leadership and integrated policy-making
(C) complete internships in industry, government, and NGOs
(D) conduct interdisciplinary research using state-of-the-art facilities in Canada and Germany, with co-supervisors from both countries.
