OUTREACH BARISTA We are looking for a passionate and enthusiastic, barista-trained individual who has a knowledge of turtle conservation and/or marine conservation to join Island Watch Conservation Initiative. About us Our organisation is involved with monitoring nesting sea turtles across Terengganu, protecting their nests, coral reef management, education and outreach. We operate between Perhentian Besar and Pulau Rawa in Terengganu, Malaysia. Our base camp is within the grounds of The Resthouse on Perhentian Besar where accommodation is basic but comfortable. Conditions on Pulau Rawa are also rustic but still comfortable. This island is uninhabited, however visited by tourists on daily snorkel trips. Both locations are inviting and communal, with plenty of opportunity to get to know your co-workers and visitors to the project. The role As an outreach barista you will fulfil a cross-disciplinary role that includes engaging with tourists, locals, brewing espresso-made coffee as well as assisting in fieldwork carried out by IWCI. This role involves working alongside our full time barista, and helping to run our small start-up coffee stall – a new initiative we are embarking upon to try and generate revenue and awareness for our sea turtle conservation projects across Terengganu, Malaysia. You will help to provide information to tourists who are interested to hear about the work we are doing and to give more information on local conservation efforts. Knowledge of coffee and previous experience as a barista is helpful in this regard as you will assist during busy periods and days off. As this is a start-up venture for a conservation organisation, it is an unpaid position, with accommodation and food provided. Note: However, this position’s compensation will include a percentage of profits. Some days will be spent at our field base on Rawa Island where you will assist with tourist and coral surveys, night patrols and management of the nesting beach. Knowledge and experience working with sea turtles/coral reefs is desirable for this role as you will be regularly engaging with visitors to the islands regarding these key issues. You will need to be comfortable living and working amongst communal camp conditions in a tropical climate. You will be part of a small, dynamic team including the project manager, barista, field interns, resthouse staff and volunteers, all working to develop and carry out novel work for the project. You will be adaptable and enthusiastic to undertake this role, with the understanding that your role will evolve with your time on the project.
