This multifaceted volunteer internship is a great opportunity to work with our staff and volunteers on ecological management issues in the North Shore of Massachusetts. Internship opportunities occur from May through August.  This includes helping us complete important field work primarily in the Great Marsh region ranging from Amesbury to Gloucester. A primary focus is working on invasive species management, such as perennial pepperweed.   The intern will  assist withmapping and pulling the invasive plant pepperweed. The intern will also help survey pools, birds and vegetation in the Great Marsh region and with data entry.  This is a great opportunity to build your leadership skills and learn more about ecology. Intern may assist our partners with additional ecological management tasks such as eel grass planting.  Hours/weeks can be flexible.

Qualifications

  • The ideal candidates (or candidate) will have a basic understanding of ecology, and willingness to learn to identify a number of the common marsh plants and birds. 
  • They must have a willingness to endure the rigors of field work and the ability to laugh-off spending long hours in the field under sometimes hot, wet, buggy, thorn-infested conditions.
  • Sense of humor, sense of fun, and commitment to Mass Audubon’s mission to protect the nature of Massachusetts are a must!
  • Physical parameters: have valid driver’s license, be able to lift 50 pounds, and walk through sometimes difficult wetland and floodplain terrain.
  • Candidate must be 18 years old or older and have his/her own transportation to and from field sites.
  • All field training is provided.
  • Must successfully pass background screening (CORI/SORI)

Compensation and Benefits

This is an unpaid position.

Location:  Wenham, MA, and sites ranging from Amesbury to Gloucester in the Great Marsh Region.
