Outdoor Learning in Surrey - Intern Opportunity (paid)

June - December 2021

Do you want to turn your environmental degree theory into practical activity?

We are looking to take on a full time intern to train in the delivery of both formal and informal outdoor education sessions and help with the team’s work to enhance habitats in school grounds.  We are looking for enthusiastic individuals with a passion for the outdoors, the natural world and an interest in working with children of all ages.

Ideally the successful applicants will hold a degree in the earth sciences, countryside management or education and hold a first aid certificate. You will be keen to develop skills in environmental education.  You will need your own transport and be willing to travel around the county.  Nower Wood is not accessible by public transport, and this will be your main place of work.  You should expect to do some weekend working but the post offers flexibility to meet our needs and yours.  The national living wage (£8.36-£8.91 per hour, age dependent) will be payable to assist the candidate. The post (5 days a week) will run from June 2021 through to mid December 2021.

Our work aims to increase the people of Surrey’s connection with nature, appreciation of our diverse natural history and now, more importantly than ever before, increase the actions that are taken to improve biodiversity and bioabundance.  We are working in schools to inspire and assist children, teachers and their local communities to take actions for nature which can range from campaigning to planting hedgerows to surveying habitats to helping teachers deliver the curriculum outdoors.  We also work out of our Community Hubs at Nower Wood in Leatherhead and Bay Pond in Godstone to deliver formal and informal education sessions for children as well as a diverse range of training courses for adults and teachers.  Although you will be largely involved with the schools side of our work, there will be opportunities to gain experience across the Trust helping with wildlife gardening, ecological survey, social media, our campaign work and practical aspects of conservation. Our team also run online events, open days, holiday clubs, family events, community days and work with volunteers.
