101 Introduction to Climate Change

This course will provide a comprehensive overview of the basics of climate change.

Providing a background of the scientific aspects of climate change, mitigation, policy and an overview of the carbon markets and economics.
Introduction to Climate Change will provide you with an overview of the Earth system and how humans have influenced the change in climate.

Sections of the course include:

Climate Change Science
Climate Change Science section will provide a basic overview of the scientific background in understanding the mechanisms of climate change (i.e., greenhouse effect). The objective of this section is to help you understand how the different Earth systems (atmosphere, land, ocean) function and interact with each other and why it is important to view climate change as a global issue. Climate change science will also provide you with the basic scientific knowledge that is the basis for policy implementation, such as Global Warming Potentials.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions Mitigation Options
The Greenhouse Gas Mitigation section will provide you with an understanding of greenhouse gas emissions trends of different sectors (e.g., energy sector) as well as technology and mitigation options available to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Climate Change Policy
This section will discuss the different approaches for crafting public policies to address the challenge of global climate change as well as how to evaluate the relative pros and cons of different options. Approaches discussed will include carbon taxes, financial incentives, emissions cap-and-trade, as well as command and control regulations.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions Markets
The carbon market section of this course will provide you with an understanding on how the carbon market was created and current market types. This section will give you an understanding of the role the Kyoto Protocol plays in the carbon market as well as efforts for global acceptance of the carbon market. This section will also give you an overview of participants as well as major players and their roles in both mandatory and voluntary carbon markets. (Note: this section of the course is meant to be supportive and not redundant to the Introduction to Carbon Markets course.)
