We’re the environment’s best kept secret. Established in 1991, we’re the UK’s statutory adviser on issues affecting the natural environment across the UK and internationally. Our primary role is advising all four Governments of the UK. With most of our work being within Government, our public profile is low but our impact is high.

What’s the role?

JNCC’s Marine Management Team provides evidence-based advice on the environmental impacts of activities affecting the offshore marine environment. The advisory functions of the team are centred on helping government(s), regulators and developers meet the requirements of relevant legislation for human activities in the offshore marine environment. Most of the team’s work focuses on advising on impacts of offshore oil and gas, renewable energy, aggregate extraction and fisheries, as well as new and emerging industry sectors such as deep-sea mining, and carbon capture and storage. We also advise on the development of marine plans.

As conservation advisers, JNCC have a significant role to play in the management of the offshore marine environment and we work closely with our partners and wider stakeholders to deliver sustainable management approaches

Job description

Post Duties

The Marine Management Team includes three Offshore Industries Advice Manager positions, who work closely together to deliver team responsibilities including line management, financial and performance reporting. Post duties will also require working closely with external stakeholders and other JNCC staff. Post duties will include:

• Lead provision of high quality, evidence based and pragmatic nature conservation advice to regulators and industry (oil and gas, aggregates, renewables, cables, deep sea mining, marine planning and more) both in the UK and, in some cases, overseas.

• Support provision of environmental information and advice in the event of pollution incidents.

• Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders (e.g. Defra, BEIS, Marine Scotland, MMO, Crown Estate, other nature conservation bodies) and represent JNCC at relevant industry, regulatory and nature conservation meetings and fora.

• Lead and support the team in delivering the team’s work programme and JNCC’s wider corporate strategy.

• Line management of Offshore Industry Advisers and project management (including financial) of strategic marine management research and development projects.

Technical skills

  • Detailed knowledge of UK legal processes for the management of regulated offshore activities such as Environmental Impact Assessment and Habitats Regulations Assessment
  • In-depth knowledge and experience of offshore marine industry sectors (e.g. oil and gas, aggregates, renewables, cables, deep sea mining, marine planning).
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of marine biodiversity in UK offshore waters (particularly benthic ecology) and of the effects of anthropogenic activities on marine species, habitats and ecosystems.
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject and/ or relevant practical work experience in this industry area
