For more than 25 years, Pew has been a major force in engaging the public and policy makers about the causes, consequences, and solutions to some of the world's most pressing environmental challenges. Our environment work spans all seven continents with more than 250 professionals working at the local, national, and international levels to reduce the scope and severity of global environmental problems, such as the erosion of large natural ecosystems that contain a great part of the world's remaining biodiversity, and the destruction of the marine environment.
Pew has worked in the United States and Canada since 1990 to protect vast stretches of wilderness and more recently expanded our land conservation efforts to Australia's Outback and Chilean Patagonia. Safeguarding these places offers an opportunity to conserve wildlife habitat, shorelines, and landscapes for current and future generations. Our work relies on the sciences of conservation, biology, and economics to advocate for practical and durable solutions to the loss of biodiversity.
In the sea, reforms to how our oceans are managed are essential to address overfishing, pollution, and loss of habitat. Pew began its oceans program in the United States, focusing on ending overfishing and protecting fragile marine habitat. Starting in 2005, Pew's ocean conservation program expanded around the world and played a significant role in reforming marine fisheries management in the European Union and on the high seas and creating marine reserves around the world. Our work is grounded in the best available science and pursues domestic and international conservation measures that are long-term and provide permanent, durable protections for marine ecosystems.
Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy
Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy (PBOL) is a partnership with Dona Bertarelli working to establish world-class regional marine conservation networks in the Southern Ocean, Eastern Tropical Pacific, and the Mediterranean including a series of highly protected marine protected areas (MPA), interconnected by biological corridors, and underpinned by strong regional governance. PBOL builds momentum to establish protected area networks across large ocean areas, which interconnect beyond national borders. Working with local and international partners, PBOL seeks to ensure effective management of marine life and habitats both within and outside of MPA boundaries (including enforcement and monitoring within MPAs, and effective fisheries conservation outside), and set a foundation for the long-term durability of the Southern Ocean, Eastern Tropical Pacific, and Mediterranean networks.
Position Overview
The officer supports strategy design, implementation, and project management towards the creation of new marine reserves in different countries, with a focus on the Eastern Tropical Pacific region, by leading technical and fisheries' analyses, organizing key meetings, working with scientists, coalition partners, government officials and others, and assisting with the coordination of internal operations.
The position will report to the PBOL senior manager for the Eastern Tropical Pacific and is based in Washington, D.C. and is eligible for 60% telework. Candidates must be presently legally authorized to work in the country for which they are seeking employment without the need of visa sponsorship.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate and develop due diligence efforts in preparation for different campaigns, including political analyses, biologic characterization, and technical analyses related to fisheries' management and fishing pressure to integrate into feasibility assessment documents.
- Manage strategic campaigns, to secure large, marine reserves in various Latin American countries, as well as other countries worldwide.
- Oversee development of supportive science, economics and other materials for the campaign.
- Coordinate and manage on-the-ground partner relationships and coalition activities. Ensure effective communication and collaboration of activities to impact public policy.
- Identify partners and opposition and develop tailored outreach strategies for each relevant stakeholder with influence on desired goals.
- Assist in the development and manage the execution of successful clear and focused strategies to meet identified campaign goals in all the various campaign sites.
- Develop timelines and operational plans for the program so as to achieve agreed goals and targets.
- Draft donor relations materials for directors.
- Devise and execute dissemination strategies for campaign policy documents, such as journal submissions, policy briefings, conferences and hearings.
- Develop and maintain working relationships with decision makers, government officials and national and international institutions, as well as relevant nongovernmental organizations in the field.
- Identify communication needs for campaign, and work with Pew communications team to develop effective communication strategies and their implementation.
- Represent Pew at high level meetings and events where marine reserve policies will be discussed.
- Represent the campaign in the media.
- Contribute to and participate in tasks of the department as assigned, as well as broader Pew-related projects and activities as needed.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience i n public policy, law, political science, social science, marine biology, or relevant field required . Advance degree in environmental science, international public policy or equivalent experience in public policy or environmental management preferred.
- At least 8 years of relevant experience required gained through professional experience, preferably in project or program management, government or public policy, with a particular familiarity and experience with conservation policy. This includes implementing programs and initiatives on national or regional scale.
- Excellent political, strategic and analytical abilities with proven program management skills to develop, execute and evaluate a range of diverse strategies to achieve goals.
- Demonstrated strong analytical and problem solving skills. Manage change and identify and implement alternative means to achieving established goals.
- Synthesize large amounts of information and to focus quickly on the essence of an issue/problem, determine whether it is ripe for intervention and identify the means to address it.
- Flexible, creative, consistent and assume high accountability for all areas of responsibility. A strong commitment to producing measurable results.
- Set and accomplish short- and long-term planning goals in line with program strategy. Achieve clear and ambitious goals. Demonstrated ability to meet multiple deadlines by maintaining a high level of organization.

- Fluency in Spanish required.
Travel
It is anticipated that the individual in this position will be based in Washington, D.C. and will need to do frequent international travel.
