Description

Applications are invited from scientists with interests in oceans and human health, cancer and aging research using marine organisms, and marine molecular biology to complement research and education activities at Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS). This is an endowed position with hard salary support for a 0.5FTE Assistant Scientist with research interests in cancer and aging in model marine organisms. The successful candidate would be expected to fill out his/her annual salary with successful solicitations for grant funding to governmental agencies and/or philanthropic sources which, at the candidate’s discretion, would be utilized to further research on oceans and human health or more broadly in marine molecular biology/genomics and/or microbial ecology. We are looking for a candidate with established collaborative relationships with a research group working in his/her area of interest with a potential for developing collaborative activities with existing BIOS research programs. Although primarily a research position, opportunities exist for teaching and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate level (http://www.bios.edu/education/). We invite applications from scientists at the entry level of Assistant Scientist, with a recent Ph.D. degree in an appropriate field required. Postdoctoral experience is desirable. Joint faculty appointments with other research institutions will be encouraged, in particular with institutions having established research programs relevant to cancer and aging using model marine organisms.

The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) is an independent U.S. not-for-profit marine research and education organization with 501(c)(3) status and a Bermuda Registered Charity #116 employing a multi-national staff of approximately 80.  Scientific activities at BIOS are wide-ranging and include oceanographic and atmospheric time-series studies, coral reef research and ocean and human health interactions.  Activities include oceanographic and marine biological research conducted by resident and visiting scientists, and university-level courses on a variety of marine science topics. The Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study (BATS), Hydrostation S program, and the Ocean Flux Program are major long-term initiatives of BIOS. The institution also supports the operations of the RV Atlantic Explorer, a UNOLS-scheduled research ship, and recently has been investing in new autonomous underwater systems with several electric gliders available for research activities. Additional information on BIOS can be found at www.bios.edu.

Qualified candidates should submit their application to include: a cover letter, a statement of research and education interests, and a curriculum vitae including names of references to: The HR Manager, BIOS, 17 Biological Station, St. Georges, GE01, Bermuda; hr@bios.edu. Review of applications will begin January 15, 2018. The position will remain open until filled.

Questions about the position and the research opportunities available at BIOS should be directed to William Curry, President and CEO (william.curry@bios.edu), and Nicholas Bates, Director of Research (nicholas.bates@bios.edu).
