Description

Based: Dakar, Senegal

Contract: Full time, permanent after six months probationary period

Salary: Dependent on experience

Annual leave: 24 days (plus public holidays) increasing by two days each year from the third year of service

EJF is working to eradicate illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and associated issues, such as human rights abuses. To do this, we work with governments and industry to promote transparency and traceability within seafood supply chains and markets. We conduct detailed investigations into illegal, unsustainable and unethical practices and actively promote improvements to policymaking, corporate governance and the management of fisheries along with raising awareness among consumers to incentivise market-driven solutions.

In West Africa, EJF has projects in Ghana and Liberia and conducts activities in Sierra Leone. Senegal is a key fishing nation in the region, an important coastal state, and the port of Dakar a key hub for global seafood trade sourced in the region, where EJF is looking to develop a presence and fully-formed project. We are seeking a campaigner based in Dakar who is passionate about protecting the marine environment to kick start our activities in Senegal. The successful candidate will be an experienced, determined and motivated person who has an understanding of advocacy, fisheries governance or other relevant fields. You are expected to be able to work independently and with international colleagues to conduct research, develop strategies and represent EJF to relevant organisations. Occasional travel within the region and abroad may be considered.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Document and analyse main issues related to IUU fishing in Senegal, scope and map main stakeholders/decision-makers.
  • Provide recommendations as to future advocacy in the country. As such, support the development of strategic goals and advocacy plans, and work with the teams in Europe to develop further funding proposals as well as sources of support for existing and new projects;
  • Working with the teams in Europe and abroad, investigate seafood tainted with IUU (and potentially human rights abuses) caught in Senegalese waters and by Senegalese-flagged vessels wherever they operate;
  • Working as part of EJF campaigning team, liaise with internal and external partners, stakeholders and decision-makers to implement a detailed advocacy plan in Senegal, including representing EJF in high-level meetings and events;
  • Engage with fishing communities to build a grassroots network of informants on industrial IUU fishing;
  • Work in collaboration with partner groups to progress campaign objectives; and
  • Develop EJF materials relevant to the campaign in Senegal.
  • Provide recommendations and complete administrative and legal procedures relating to setting up an office/legal entity in Senegal.

Essential skills and attributes:

  • At least three years professional experience in environmental policy, oceans issues, human rights, government and/or other relevant fields;
  • Demonstrable professional experience in research, public affairs or communications;
  • Attention to detail and ability to manage and prioritise tasks; and
  • Professional level fluency in English, Wolof and French.

To apply please send your English CV and a short covering letter explaining why you are the ideal candidate to recruitment@ejfoundation.org before 17 December 2020, noting where you saw the ad for this role. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted in January 2021.
