CSIRO Land and Water has an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Fellow to improve our understanding of the role of vegetation in the coupled water and carbon cycle over the Australian continent. The successful candidate will use, evaluate and further develop a state-of-the-art biophysical model to simulate the role of vegetation on the carbon balance and surface water and energy balance over large areas. An important research challenge will be to constrain model behaviour using plant functional convergence theory and satellite observations. The resulting model improvements will be used to assess where in Australia there are opportunities to capture carbon with water, and conversely where 'carbon-friendly' vegetation management may threaten water security. This project is aligned with the two major current R&D initiatives between the Bureau of Meteorology and CSIRO: the development of the Australian Water Resources Information System (AWRIS) and the Australian Community Climate Earth System Simulator, ACCESS).
