The ideal candidate for this position will be an experienced conservation professional with five to seven years experience leading outcome-based conservation programs with reputable regional or global organizations. This individual will also have a demonstrated track record of success with a keen understanding of the complexities of the political, economic and cultural climate in North America.

The ideal candidate must possess highly developed project management skills, including project design, development, outcomes management and implementation. S/he will work with the Director of North American Programs to carry out and evaluate current programs and projects.

The successful candidate will possess strong strategic and analytical skills with the ability to work in stressful and occasionally ambiguous situations. S/he will have the proven ability to negotiate, influence, and collaborate with other key stakeholders in a matrix environment, including conservation interests, landowners, tribes, politicians, and other citizen groups. The ideal candidate must have the ability to think quickly, analyze diverse data, and articulate a clear, focused direction. Organizational skills, budget experience, and excellent speaking and writing skills are essential.

The ideal candidate will also be skilled in developing and coaching staff to build their effectiveness and encourage their professional development.

The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills abilities and characteristics:

  • Demonstrated planning and organizational skills with the ability to think strategically and creatively, yet have the ability to execute with precision.
  • Superb interpersonal, communication, diplomacy and presentation skills with the ability to effectively communicate with internal partners and to build strong relationships with key external partners including governmental agencies, foundations, political stakeholders, and other NGOs.
  • Highly developed creative program management experience with the ability to adjust program methodology in the face of changing governmental rules, regulations, and political decision makers.
  • Commitment to the environment and to the preservation of biologically significant salmonid habitat.
  • Experience in using creative problem solving methods to identify key opportunities and inhibitors. Demonstrated success in developing substantive and technical knowledge of economic, social and political issues and providing guidance and value added contributions on program design and implementation.

Position Requirements

  • Expertise in the development and implementation of environmental conservation programs.
  • Strong understanding of North Pacific environmental and conservation issues.
  • Demonstrated administrative management skills including supervision of staff.
  • Strong organizational and analytic skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proven commitment to the public interest.
  • Bachelor of Science or terminal professional degree preferred.

Position Responsibilities

The North American Program Coordinator is responsible for assisting the North American Program Director of the Wild Salmon Center in developing and carrying out strategic programs in North America.

Specifically the responsibilities include:

  • Oversee the work of the North American Program staff and ensure the implementation of conservation programs consistent with the Organization's mission and strategic plan.
  • Ensure that North American Program plans are developed and carried out in an efficient and professional manner, including programs in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California and British Columbia.
  • Ensure that reports to foundations or other donors are completed in a timely and professional manner.
  • Work with the Chief Financial Officer to ensure that conservation programs are within budget and any potential budgetary overruns are identified early.
  • Represent the Organization in policy, legislative, and other public and private forums as a spokesperson for the North American Program and the Organization.

Education

Bachelor's degree is required. Education in fish biology or other earth sciences is desirable but not required.

Travel

This position requires travel of one week or less per month, on average, mostly within Oregon, Washington, and Alaska.

Compensation

The compensation package includes a competitive base salary depending upon experience. An excellent benefits package including 401(k) match, medical and dental plan, life insurance and disability coverage, and 125 health and dependent care plan is also provided.
