Description

Do you want to join a new team committed to climate action and delivering change? Can you bring transformative change in the way buildings are used and maintained? This role is for someone with a practical and collaborative approach to net zero who can lead churches in Scotland to become more environmentally friendly and sustainable.

The Scottish Episcopal Church (SEC) has a published Net Zero Action Plan 2023-30 and is building a flexible and enthusiastic team to support the implementation of its ambitious Net Zero targets.  It seeks experienced net zero specialists to provide support and guidance to churches and Dioceses.

About the Job: You will have equal opportunity to work at both national and regional levels.

You will support and guide Scottish Episcopal Church communities by providing a reliable base of knowledge and experience on the sustainability of Net Zero actions. You will use your skills and experience in sustainability best practice to assist churches to develop environmentally sustainable Net Zero projects through project support, research, knowledge, and guidance. You will design a strategic programme to deliver bespoke sustainability appraisals for churches and conduct strategic site surveys to across Scotland.

You will develop and deliver regular guidance and online resources on sustainability, Net Zero, and climate change adaptation and use your time in the role to develop case studies and templates for wider use. You will seek out learning and partnership opportunities to keep Dioceses and churches equipped with solutions to further grow the SEC’s Net Zero experience base.

You will also play a key role in direct engagement with individual Dioceses, working alongside the rest of the Net Zero Team to nurture relationships and help them develop their own action plans. You will use your knowledge and experience of the environmental sector to ensure best practice for Net Zero actions and ensure the long term ethical and environmental sustainability of plans and projects.

About you: You should have experience working in the environmental management or sustainability sector, particularly in understanding the economic, environmental, and social aspects of Net Zero actions. You should have excellent interpersonal and written communication skills to be able to demonstrate the complexities of sustainability through a range of mediums. You should also have demonstrable knowledge of the sustainability of most practical Net Zero solutions and an ability to communicate these to a range of faith-based audiences.

Things you need to know: You will report to the Net Zero Delivery Director and work within a new Net Zero Team to support the SEC’s seven Dioceses (regions). This role will be remote based, however regular travel to Dioceses across Scotland will be required as well as attendance at routine meetings in the General Synod Office in Edinburgh where you will meet with the rest of your team. You may be required to work some evenings and weekends.

The SEC comprises some 300 churches, with a total membership of about 24,000. The Net Zero Delivery Director is coordinating the new team consisting of five new roles.  These are Innovation Coordinator, Empowerment Coordinator, Carbon Projects and Data Officer, Net Zero Sustainability Officer and Clean Energy Officer.

All postholders will work closely as a team and provide progress reports and advice as necessary.

Starting salary is dependent on experience.

Benefits: flexible working, working from home within a remote team; non-contributory final salary pension scheme
