Description

The Indicators and Assessments Unit at ZSL is offering an excellent opportunity to gain experience interning with one of the UK’s leading conservation research organisations. Two internships are available on globally focused conservation projects, starting in July 2012.

Please see below for details and state which project/s you are interested in when applying.

National Red List project

ZSL is looking for a Project Intern to assist on the National Red List database and website. This project builds networks and knowledge for national conservation decision making and acts as a focal point for national red lists and action plans. The database contains accounts for over 70,000 species from 45 regions globally, supported by network information, mapping tools and case studies.

The role is primarily to manage the project database which will include general maintenance and updating the website; uploading existing data; expanding the network and seeking new data partners; answering queries sent via the website and overseeing the conversion of the entire site to a new format. The successful applicant will play a supporting role in the development of the project, contribute to the development of grant proposals to undertake and fund the 5 year strategic plan developed for national Red Lists, and oversee communications with the expert network, keeping the network active and raising awareness of the project across a range of audiences.

Candidates must have an undergraduate degree or above in biology, zoology, ecology, conservation biology or a related subject. They should be IT proficient with exceptional attention to detail, along with strong communication skills and an ability to work independently. Database experience is highly desirable, particularly a working knowledge of SQL; knowledge of word press would be an advantage.

Sampled Red List Index project

ZSL is looking for a Project Intern to assist on collating data for the Sampled Red List Index project. The IUCN Sampled Red List Index enables conservationists and policy-makers to determine whether targets to reduce biodiversity loss, such as those set by the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Millennium Development Goals, are being met. The index is based on Red List assessments from a wide range of species groups, including large numbers of invertebrates, in order to give a picture broadly representative of biodiversity as a whole.

This six-month position will involve collaborating with a network of international scientists and species experts to compile data, and review and validate Red List assessments of dung beetles. Preparation of conservation assessment documentation to submit to the IUCN, including the creation of distribution maps in GIS, will be carried out. There is potential for interns to contribute to additional ongoing projects within the Indicators and Assessments Unit.

Candidates must have an undergraduate degree or above in biology, zoology, aquatic biology, or related subject such as geography or environmental science. They should be IT proficient, and have strong research and leadership skills. Knowledge of GIS would also be an advantage, though training is provided.

Both positions are full-time voluntary positions for six months based in London; ZSL will reimburse lunches, and travel costs from within the Greater London area. Please send a covering letter outlining your interest and suitability for the role, and your CV to Ben Collen (ben.collen@ioz.ac.uk).

You will be contacted by the 29th June if you have been selected for an interview. Start date will be as soon as possible at the beginning of July.
