The Great Lakes/Atlantic Regional Office of Ducks Unlimited, Inc. (DU) has an opening for a Regional Biologist position in Wetland Mitigation. The successful candidate will join a highly motivated, interdisciplinary conservation team responsible for delivering and managing a growing regional wetland mitigation program that is primarily based in New York State and Vermont. This full-time salaried position will report to the DU North Atlantic Field Office in Syracuse, NY. Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Resources, Business, Ecology, Conservation, Wildlife Management, Engineering or an applicable related field from an accredited college or university
- Strong working knowledge wetland ecology and wetland restoration project delivery.
- Knowledge of wetland mitigation rules and regulations.
- Excellent project management skills, written and oral communication skills, interpersonal skills.
- Identifying and seeking out wetland restoration opportunities.
- Wetland delineations including soils, hydrology and plant identification.
- Proficiency with GPS data collection and GIS: ability to develop site-specific project maps integrating field and other data sources.
- Ability to track deliverable requirements, budget position, and meet deadlines for multiple projects.
- Self-motivated, goal oriented, and self-starter.
- Ability to work both in a collaborative team environment and independently.
Desired Qualifications Include:
- Experience delivering/managing voluntary wetland restoration projects will be viewed favorably.
- Vegetative sampling protocol, hydrological monitoring, wetland permitting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and state level permitting agencies, state historic preservation office permits, threatened and endangered species permittees, soil and erosion control permits, project budget management, program management.
- Storm water compliance and construction oversight.
- Experience conserving land with a non-profit or governmental organization.
- Proficiency reviewing/requisitioning legal boundary surveys.
- Licensed drone operator.
Duties and Responsibilities: The successful candidate will work with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, state agencies, large corporations, businesses and consulting firms on wetland mitigation projects. Workload will primarily be focused on advancing new mitigation projects through all phases of mitigation project delivery from site identification, vetting for restoration potential, acquisition, permitting, construction oversight, monitoring, adaptive management, and assistance executing long-term site protection mechanisms.
- Identifying and working collaboratively to secure wetland restoration projects
- Performing annual monitoring and reporting
- Managing projects to meet final performance criteria
- Developing mitigation plans for wetland restoration projects
- Developing requests for quotes for land management activities (e.g., invasive plant management, site prep, disking)
- Develop and steward collaborative relationships with the Interagency Review Team, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, partnering organizations, and land trusts
- Attend project meetings, conduction field inspections and perform construction management oversight as needed
- Field work may require strenuous outdoor activity in difficult environmental conditions. Must be able to operate an ATV when necessary
- Position will travel between states of responsibility and occasionally outside of the region for conferences and meetings
- Willingness to work outside of normal business hours, willingness to work independently, travel overnight, work in inclement weather, and ability to work with minimal supervision in remote work environments
- Represent DU in a professional manner at all times
