Employment Location and Work Area:
Position will be located in the Ducks Unlimited Great Plains Regional Office in Bismarck, ND.  Primary work area will be the State of North Dakota.  Periodic work may be necessary in surrounding states on South Dakota and Montana.

Position Overview:
The Mitigation Intern will work with the Ducks Unlimited Mitigation Specialist to promote the mitigation program to private landowners throughout the state.  The Mitigation Program is an effort to restore or enhance drained or impaired wetlands to offset wetland loss due to construction activities.  The position will require travel and extended stays away from the Ducks Unlimited office.  The position is funded until July, 2015 but may be longer subject to workload.   The Mitigation Intern must be able to communicate well with agriculture producers concerning the mitigation program, wetland restorations and the benefits to producers in North Dakota.  

Duties

 

  • Perform one-on-one visits with agriculture producers and ranchers throughout the state concerning mitigation and restoration of wetlands.
  • Complete pertinent correspondence to producers.
  • Develop news articles and fact sheets for the public.
  • Assist with mitigation documents including banking prospectus and instrument.
  • Assist with on-site reconnaissance including soils investigation and wetland determinations.

Planning

 

  • Identify potential landowners with drained wetlands.
  • Contact potential landowners to discuss mitigation program.
  • Inventory the natural resources and condition of the client’s land unit.
  • Analyze the collected resources data.
  • Formulate mitigation credit potential.

 

Qualifications

 

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in natural resources or wildlife management.
  • Strong communication and writing skills.
  • Ability to travel frequently and work effectively away from home or office.
  • Ability to function both individually and as a member of diverse teams.
  • Able to interact with people effectively.
  • Knowledgeable of common farming practices and ability to communicate with landowners.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
