The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is seeking an intern to provide support to the Marine Reserves Coalition (MRC). The MRC is a multi-NGO collaboration between ZSL, Greenpeace UK, the Marine Conservation Society, the Pew Charitable Trusts and the Blue Marine Foundation, set up in 2011 to work collectively on the designation of marine reserves; fully protected, no-take marine areas closed to all extractive and potentially damaging activities.
Based in the Conservation Programmes department at ZSL, the successful candidate will directly contribute towards MRC preparations for the International Marine Conservation Congress, taking place in August 2014. Duties will include extensive research on all aspects of marine protected area (MPA) policy and science, including analysis on current global MPA coverage, using the World Database on Protected Areas. There will be a strong focus on information dissemination, through writing briefings, website updates, reports and other communications. Additional tasks will include assisting with campaign and public outreach activities, in particular the organisation of Project Ocean and World Oceans Day events in June 2014. This is a desk-based position, although successful candidates will be required to attend off-site meetings and events where appropriate.
Successful candidates must have: • A university background in marine biology/conservation sciences (or equivalent) – preferably to MSc level • Exceptional written communication skills • Strong attention to detail • Excellent research and analytical skills • Knowledge of UK and international marine conservation policy • Excellent IT skills • Experience in using ArcGIS
The internship is for four months, and will ideally run from 28 April to 29 August 2014. The role is part time (4 days per week) and is based within ZSL’s Conservation Programmes department in Regent’s Park. All applicants must be able to show that they have permission to work in the UK.
Please note that this is a voluntary position. However, ZSL will reimburse travel costs from within the Greater London area (zones 1-6) and lunches (up to £5 a day). There should be no expectation that any paid position will arise out of this internship.
Closing date for applications: 19 March 2014
Interviews likely to be held the week commencing 24 March 2014 (If you have not been contacted by this date we regret that you have been unsuccessful on this occasion)
