Summary

Who are JNCC?

Established in 1991, we’re the UK’s statutory advisor on issues affecting the natural environment across the UK and internationally. Our primary role is advising all four Governments of the UK. We also work with private sector organisations to support decision making on the sustainable use of marine waters and natural resources around the UK. JNCC is led by the Joint Committee, which brings together members from the nature conservation bodies for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and independent members appointed by the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs under an independent Chair. Support is provided to the Committee by approx. 270 people who bring together scientific and technical expertise, extensive knowledge of policy at global, European and national levels, and skills in working with other organisations. Staff are based in two main offices in Peterborough and Aberdeen.

JNCC’s Marine Species Team provides expert advice on the conservation of marine species in UK, European and international waters, with a focus on marine birds and marine mammals. Our marine bird work covers monitoring on land and at sea; the provision of population estimates and trends in abundance and demographics; and the interpretation of evidence to advise on conservation and management, especially on the assessment of impacts from offshore industries and fisheries. 

We are currently seeking two Marine Ornithologists to join the Marine Species Team. They will support the delivery of the Seabird Monitoring Programme; ‘Seabirds Count’ breeding seabird census; Volunteer Seabirds at Sea monitoring programme (VSAS); Marine Natural Capital and Ecosystem Assessment programme; completion of the red-throated diver energetics project and development and delivery of new projects; and assist with advising on marine protected areas, such as the Irish Sea Front SPA. They will also be involved with the provision of advice on the impacts of industry on marine birds (including offshore wind, oil and gas and commercial fisheries).

Two posts are being advertised as part of this recruitment and successful applicants will be assigned a selection of the following duties based on their individual experience and skills:

•    Coordinate delivery of VSAS training, surveys and route expansion in Scotland.
•    Support delivery of VSAS England expansion project.
•    Ensure VSAS data are validated and uploaded to the Seabirds at Sea database.
•    Develop and produce seabirds at sea statistics to meet reporting requirements.
•    Provide SMP and Seabirds Count census project support.
•    Lead on planning and delivery of marine waterbird population surveys in England.
•    Develop conservation advice for protected sites.
•    Provide advice on the impacts of project proposals on marine bird populations.
•    Work with partner organisations to improve the evidence base for quantifying impacts of industry on marine birds, and assess potential measures to compensate for negative impacts.
•    Help develop research proposals and funding applications.
•    Project management including externally funded projects.
•    Improve understanding of wider drivers of change for marine bird populations, and management interventions that can improve overall status and resilience.

  • Good understanding of seabird ecology and the methods used for assessing their population size and distribution (essential)
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex information, both verbally and written, to non-technical audiences (essential)
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others to develop common understanding and joint approaches to assessment/use of evidence (essential)
  • Ability to analyse, interpret and manage scientific information, including experience of applying statistical methods (essential)
  • Seabird identification skills and survey experience (desirable)
  • Experience of database management, ideally using Access and/or SQL to process, validate, input, query and manipulate data (desirable)

Leave entitlement

JNCC annual leave allowance is 25 days per annum. After five years’ service, leave entitlement increases to 30 days per annum.
