This graduate placement position will contribute to the delivery of NRW’s programme of marine monitoring through supporting team members and their programme of work as required whilst receiving training 

This will include preparation of equipment, data collection, analysis and archiving. During the summer a lot of work will either be undertaken on the sea shore or from survey vessels and will include long days at sea and extended periods away from the office.

Responsibilities:

Setting direction

  • Support the planning of surveys, ensuring all equipment and technical apparatus is prepared for use. Identify additional requirements (equipment and personnel) and ensure these needs are met. This will require a reasonable amount technical competence. Excellent organisation skills and communication with other team members will be required
  • Support those developing and implementing strategies and policies

Delivering results

  • Routine survey work will be completed alongside other team members and will follow a prescribed methodology contributing to NRW’s evidence-based needs. An understanding of the health and safety requirements and implications in relation to the work activity will be required
  • Data recording and processing will require accuracy and diligence to ensure scientific integrity. Checking and validation of data/information will be characteristic of this role before archiving appropriately
  • Some numerical data analysis will be expected requiring a basic understanding of statistics and ability to create charts and plots in Microsoft Excel
  • There may be a need to write small reports under the supervision of other team members, to communicate interpretation of the data analysis
  • Some technical analysis of image and video data will be required using specialist software. Training for this will be provided

Building relationships

  • Work will be mainly focused within the team, however there will be communication with other teams and contractors. This will include liaising with others whilst preparing for surveys, and also with regard to data archiving after surveys are completed

Ensuring effective governance

  • Maintain and monitor performance against agreed goals and targets set out in the team’s work plan
  • Report exceptions, near misses and incidents in line with corporate requirements

Developing people and teams

  • There are no line management responsibilities for this role. However, the role will be responsible for mentoring the overlapping placement student towards the end of their placement with support and direction from other team members

Job Specific Criteria:

1)     An understanding of the practical and theoretical aspects of species and habitat monitoring relating to intertidal, subtidal or marine mammals.

2)     A good level of organisation, communication and interpersonal skills are required as well as an ability to work well as part of a team.

3)     Good ICT skills, particularly data handling and spreadsheets but also experience in using image manipulation software such as Adobe Photoshop and video editing such as Adobe Premiere.

4)     Reasonable fitness level – frequently there is a need to work long hours often on the sea shore or boat that can be physically demanding.

5)     Practical skills including handling and maintenance of survey and boat equipment as well as diving equipment and cameras.

6)     Knowledge of COSHH and Health and Safety regulations relating to workshops and laboratories.

Welsh Language Requirements:

Level 1: The ability to speak Welsh is not essential for this post, but a basic understanding of Welsh, or a willingness to learn is desirable. Appointees learning or wishing to learn Welsh will receive full support from NRW.

Additional Information:

Applicants for this position must have graduated within the previous 12 months.

A full driving licence is required.

The placement will be based in Bangor, North Wales but will be required to spend up to 5 weeks working away from at other locations in Wales during the course of the placement. Travel and subsistence costs associated with this will be paid for / reimbursed by NRW.

Training and Personal Protective Equipment will be provided.

Job Advert Information

  • Contract type: Fixed Term Appointment until 6th September 2019 with the possible for this to be extended
  • Work pattern: 37 hours per week (although flexible hours during field working periods) and have an annual pro rata leave allocation of 28 days
  • Grade / Salary: £18,098.00
