Description

JNCC advises Government on UK and international nature conservation. We are seeking a Marine Monitoring & Evidence Manager to join our Marine Monitoring and Evidence team, based in Peterborough, and on a Fixed Term Appointment basis.

We are looking for a highly motivated project manager to work with national partners to develop the advice on Marine Biodiversity Monitoring and the implementation of a UK Marine Biodiversity Monitoring programme to the UK Governments.  JNCC have led the development of a strategic framework for marine biodiversity monitoring, to encompass the requirements of all policy and statutory obligations in the most effective and cost-efficient manner. The Marine Monitoring team have led the development of costed monitoring options for seabirds, cetaceans and habitats in both the wider environment and in Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). As part of the overall strategy, the team has also supported other partners to develop monitoring advice for other elements of biodiversity (Pelagic habitats, Seals, Fish and cephalopods). This work is a key deliverable of the marine monitoring and evidence team and would be led by the post-holder. Other duties of the post will include:

  • Lead the preparation of technical papers and progress reports for the Marine Biodiversity Monitoring Programme.
  • Lead on aspects of the wider benthic habitats monitoring research and development work.
  • Work with others at JNCC and with partners to plan and deliver operational monitoring for MPAs in UK offshore waters and liaise with seabird and cetacean specialists regarding monitoring activities. 
  • Work to improve marine data management policies and systems for the Defra group in line with wider JNCC and Defra digital programmes.
  • Work with innovation leads to improve JNCC-led marine data systems to ensure they are fit for purpose, futureproof and allow for easier evidence/data discovery.
  • Line manage other staff as necessary
  • Perform the required tasks of a Project Manager including undertaking corporate and business responsibilities such as corporate planning, performance and financial reporting plus the drafting and management of contracts necessary to support the development of the Marine Monitoring Programme

A key requirement of this post is a good knowledge of marine biodiversity monitoring and how science informs and shapes policy, together with strong organisational and communication skills and experience working with stakeholders able to maximise collaboration and coordination both within JNCC and with external organisations and partners to deliver the work programme.
