Position to be based in Ocean Conservancy's St. Petersburg, Florida office The Marine Fisheries Scientist works with senior science staff and a team of Ocean Conservancy scientists, attorneys, policy advocates, media and outreach staff to support Ocean Conservancy’s science-based advocacy efforts to secure sustainable fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: Acquires, analyzes and interprets fisheries-related information and data to characterize the status, behavior and performance of fisheries, key fish stocks, and fishery management bodies in order to advance Ocean Conservancy goals of conservation and sustainability. Acquires information and data on all aspects of fisheries, the biology and ecology of fished and related species, their habitats and environments, and the sociological and economics characteristics of the fisheries. Describes, summarizes, analyzes, synthesizes and interprets such information and data. Identifies gaps in our knowledge and formulates strategies for filling those gaps. Prepares reports and papers detailing the findings of these investigations. Develops tools, methodologies and approaches to best use existing scientific data in meeting conservation goals. Assesses and critiques stock assessment models, stock assessment data and analyses with respect to OC’s conservation and sustainability goals. Conducts stock assessment analyses, customizes and runs stock assessment models to evaluate different fisheries, provide alternate scenarios to NMFS, and to examine different management policies. Analyzes current and proposed fisheries management policies to ensure they are scientifically sound and achieving conservation mandates. Uses the information, findings and their policy implications to develop strategies for affecting the changes in policy and management practices necessary for achieving sustainable fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico region. QUALIFICATIONS: PhD in fisheries science, or closely related field. Minimum 3- 5 years professional experience with the acquisition, organization, analysis, synthesis, interpreting and reporting of a range of the scientific information and data. Experience and proficiency in data management, in devising, conducting and interpreting statistical, modeling, and stock assessment analyses (or equivalent). Excellent working knowledge of Excel, Access and Arcview (or equivalent), and with statistical analysis, computer modeling packages, and stock assessment models. Familiarity with US marine fishery management regulations and policy, and the practices of marine fishery management agencies preferred. Experience using scientific information to affect policy changes in fisheries or other natural resource management arenas. Ability to clearly formulate and communicate complex ideas orally and in writing. Excellent writing skills and proficiency with MS Word (or equivalent). Demonstrated ability to work effectively with other scientists and in collaboration with a diverse project team. Ability to work with minimal supervision, set priorities among competing projects, meet objectives and deadlines, resolve routine problems independently, and recognize and work with supervisor to resolve complex or unusual problems. Demonstrated leadership and project management skills.
