This post will have a base in either Peterborough or Aberdeen.

JNCC has adopted a hybrid working approach, allowing colleagues to benefit from time in the office, with the flexibility also to work from home. Employees are expected to work from our office base for 1 – 2 days a month as a minimum, this will vary by team and the exact balance will depend on the nature of your role. We can provide more details at the interview and offer stages.

Most of the work will be office/home based, but you will also be required to attend meetings and workshops in the UK and overseas, which will involve staying away from home overnight or for up to a week’s duration.

We also work with private sector organisations to support decision making on the sustainable use of marine waters and natural resources around the UK. JNCC is led by the Joint Committee, which brings together members from the nature conservation bodies for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and independent members appointed by the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs under an independent Chair. Support is provided to the Committee by approx. 270 people who bring together scientific and technical expertise, extensive knowledge of policy at global, European and national levels, and skills in working with other organisations. Staff are based in two main offices in Peterborough and Aberdeen.

Hours of work: Full-time

Normal minimum hours of attendance for the post are 36 hours per week over a 5-day period, Monday to Friday.

As well as operating a hybrid model of working and offering family friendly opportunities, all colleagues at JNCC can work flexibly within the hours of 7am-7pm and have the opportunity to build flexi credit to enable them to work more flexibly.

Annual Leave:

The annual leave allowance is 25 days per year, rising to 30 days per year after 5 years’ service. Part-time staff will receive this on a pro rata basis. Short Summary:

JNCC are looking for a Marine Evidence Manager (deep-sea mining) to join the Marine Evidence Team. You will work under the guidance of JNCC’s Marine Evidence Team Leaders, with a range of other specialists, both within JNCC and in other organisations. Using your knowledge of marine biodiversity, deep-sea mining and other marine industries, you will manage the delivery of robust scientific evidence and advice to Defra, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and the Department for Energy, Security and Net Zero, on environmental aspects of deep-sea mining, working in close partnership with colleagues at Cefas. You will also support Defra and FCDO as part of the UK delegation to the International Seabed Authority (ISA) Council meetings and at external UK and international meetings and workshops, as required. Furthermore, you will lead the science-policy objective of a NERC-funded research project, Seabed Mining and Resilience to Experimental Impact (SMARTEX), working closely with project leads at the National Oceanography Centre and the Natural History Museum.

Job Description:

Post Duties

• Provide robust evidence-based advice to UK government departments on the environmental elements of international deep-sea mining regulations, standards and guidelines.

• Provide robust environmental expertise and advice on other international and UK deep-sea mining policy and scientific documents.

• Support Defra and FCDO as part of the UK delegation to the International Seabed Authority Council meetings up to 2x a year.

• Provide deep-sea ecology and marine industry expertise at relevant UK and

international deep-sea mining related meetings and workshops, as required.

• Act as JNCC project lead for the NERC-funded “Seabed Mining and Resilience to Experimental Impact” (SMARTEX) project.

• Lead the development and delivery of a UK science-policy workshop, in 2024, on deep-sea mining, under the SMARTEX project.

• Project management (including financial) of JNCC’s deep-sea mining work.

• Lead the coordination of JNCC Marine’s work on Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ), and Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ), with a focus on Environmental Impact Assessment and Marine Protected Areas.

• Support other JNCC work areas as required, such as supporting the provision of high quality, evidence based and pragmatic nature conservation advice to regulators and marine industries such as oil and gas, aggregates, renewables and subsea cabling.

Technical

To be a successful candidate you will have:

• In-depth knowledge and understanding of deep-sea mining and/or of other relevant offshore marine industry sectors (such as oil and gas, aggregates).

• Advanced knowledge and understanding of marine biodiversity in offshore waters, with a deep-sea specialism, and of the effects of anthropogenic activities on marine species, habitats and ecosystems.

• The ability to synthesise varied and/or complex information into succinct evidence products that can inform decision-making processes.

• Expertise in project management with experience leading workshops or other similar activities.
