Description |
Falklands Conservation is the only membership-based conservation organisation in the Falkland Islands. It is long-established with a dedicated team of ten full time staff members. It carries out an ambitious array of terrestrial and marine conservation focussed activities, including an active youth development programme, to progress its vision is for a well-functioning natural environment managed by those living closest to it. The highly productive seas around the Falkland Islands support millions of seabirds, prolific fish stocks and recovering whale populations. They are the current foundation of the Islands economy through fishing and tourism sectors, and through development of new hydrocarbons and aquaculture industries currently being explored. Despite their global significance Falkland’s waters are relatively poorly understood and cohesive management of the marine environment is yet to be developed. With industry development interests growing, coupled with those of research and conservation management, this is an exciting opportunity to lead Falklands Conservation’s part in developing and delivering a vision for the Falklands marine environment through engagement with key stakeholders. Falklands Conservation works in partnership with the local and international community to achieve its aims. The post will therefore suit an applicant experienced in engaging with stakeholders on marine environmental issues who will be familiar with marine legislation and policy, and have a keen interest in inspiring the Falklands’ community about the importance of the marine environment. The Marine Conservation Officer will engage with community, marine user, and decision-makers to develop a vision for the Falklands marine environment through delivery of Falklands Conservation’s three year Marine Management project. The role will also lead on the development of Falklands Conservation’s internal strategy for future marine work.
