Description

The Zoological Society of London is seeking two interns to provide support to the UK & Europe Conservation Programme.
Successful candidates will be part of a busy team, focusing on marine and freshwater projects, and will have the opportunity to gain experience interning at a globally respected conservation organisation.

The internship will have a significant research component (60% of the time) and candidates are expected to spend at least two days a week in the field, throughout their six month contract. Additional responsibilities will include maintaining and updating the marine mammal sightings database; data input and analysis; representing ZSL at meetings and
events; and providing general support to all other projects in the UK & Europe conservation programme. Field surveys primarily consist of:

  • Juvenile European eel recruitment monitoring in the Thames catchment.
  • Adult European eel research and monitoring in the North Kent Marshes.
  • Seal counts within the Thames Estuary.

A successful candidate must have an undergraduate and preferably a masters level degree in Marine Biology or a related subject. They must be self-motivated, have experience carrying out surveys in the field
and the ability to complete research in sometimes testing field conditions. Furthermore, candidates need to have exceptional research, analytical and communication skills, as they will be tasked with drafting reports, posters and updating the website. Existing knowledge of the Thames Estuary and its fauna would be advantageous.

It is essential that candidates have either a full UK manual driving licence, or equivalent, and be confident of driving through London.

The internship is for six months, starting on 25 March 2013 and running until the 27 September 2013. The role is part time (4
days per week) and is based at ZSL’s Conservation Programmes department in Regent’s Park. All applicants must be able to show that they have permission to complete an internship in the UK.

Please note that this is a voluntary position and there should be no expectation that any paid position will arise out of this internship. However, ZSL will reimburse travel costs from within the Greater London area (zones 1-6) and lunches (max £5 a day).

two referees to marineandfreshwater@zsl.org.

The closing date for applications is midnight Sunday 10th March 2013.
