The Tropical Ecology Assessment and Monitoring (TEAM) Managing Director is responsible for guiding, managing and monitoring the successful day-to-day operations of the expanding TEAM Network, including managing the activities of the TEAM Network Office, a growing portfolio of monitoring sites in Africa, Asia and Latin America, and maintaining productive and cohesive relationships among partner institutions. (S)he reports to and keeps the TEAM Vice President fully apprised of all matters relating to the success of the TEAM Network. The Managing Director is responsible for ensuring that members of the Network Office work effectively as a team and ensures successful implementation of TEAM’s objectives and obligations. S(he) plays a key role in ensuring the scientific integrity and sucessful expansion of the TEAM network. This position provides oversight that will result in improved partner relationships, scientific integrity, grant-making, reporting, effective financial and time management, opportunities for collaboration and cooperation and maintenance and improvement of links with partner institution internal activities, including those in CI’s Science + Knowledge Division. This is a highly visible position that requires leadership of multi-institution teams, distributed in Africa, Asia and Latin America, complex negotiation with internal and external partners and regular interaction with all levels of staff across the TEAM partner institutions.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervision of TEAM Network office staff and all Network activities
  • Maintain productive and cohesive relationships and communication among international and local partner institutions, including negotiation, development and management of 5-year and 1-year multi-institution, joint workplans and budgets.
  • Oversight of all aspects of TEAM financial management and grant management activities, including planning and modeling, proposal development, budgeting, performance monitoring and reporting to donors and grantee reporting to TEAM and CI.

 

Working Conditions

  • About 20 to 25% travel, mostly international, including some travel to remote locations

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Requirements

  • Advanced degree (Masters or Ph.D.) in ecology, environmental science or a related field.
  • Minimun of 10 years of successful leadership and management of complex programs in a science or conservation setting, including project, financial, grants and operations management
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in international conservation
  • Minimum of 5 years of international field experience
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, including the ability to negotiate complex agreements in multi-cultural and international settings, and ability to interact with staff and external partners at all organizational levels
  • Understanding of in-country capacity issues and associated impacts on budget development and monitoring processes
  • Ability to lead interdisciplinary teams in dynamic environments and meet deadlines
  • High level of personal integrity
  • High level of business acumen as well as strong analytical skills in order to ask and answer key business questions
