 Under the auspices of the Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN), an international coalition of leading conservation groups, the Rainforest Alliance’s Sustainable Agriculture Division works with farmers to ensure compliance with the SAN standards for protecting wildlife, farm land, workers’ rights and local communities. Farms that meet these rigorous environmental, ethical and economic standards are awarded the Rainforest Alliance Certified™ seal.

The Sustainable Agriculture Division consists of the Sustainable Landscapes Program, the Sustainable Value Chains Program, the Sustainable Agriculture Auditing Services Program, the Traceability Unit and Program Administration. The work of the Sustainable Agriculture Division is closely linked to the work of the SAN Secretariat, housed in Rainforest Alliance’s Costa Rica office.  

Position Summary: 

The Operations Manager is a key member of both HQ Operations and the Division management team. S/he will provide critical support to the Sustainable Agriculture Division management and ensures that the Sustainable Agriculture Division is implementing its work plans efficiently, effectively and in accordance with Rainforest Alliance policies and procedures. Under the guidance of the VP for Global Operations & Planning and the Managing Director of the Sustainable Agriculture Division, s/he will assist with the design of an operational plan which ensures the division meets its strategic goals. S/he will liaise closely with Human Resources, the Evaluation & Research Program, the Development Division, the Office of General Counsel and the Finance & Administration Divisions. S/he will also work closely with the Sustainable Agriculture Division’s Finance & Budget Manager.

Responsibilties: 

Operations

  • Monitor and manage the operation of the Sustainable Agriculture Division’s strategic and work plans;
  • Serve as a liaison between the Sustainable Agriculture Division,  Human Resources and Office of General Counsel to support the operations of the Sustainable Agriculture Division’s activities;
  • Oversee and coordinate Sustainable Agriculture Division staff training;
  • Manage the move of the Sustainable Agriculture Division in and out of jurisdictions in close cooperation with Sustainable Agriculture Division staff, the Office of General Counsel, Human Resources, and Finance & Administration; and
  • Coordinate the addressing of operational issues with Heads of Offices where needed.

Policies and Procedures

  • Foster a culture of adherence to all Rainforest Alliance’s Policies and Procedures; and
  • Act as the division’s go-to-person for information on policies and procedures.

Communications

  • Serve as a key communication conduit to and from HQ and Regional support divisions and Sustainable Agriculture Division management and other staff.  Ensure the timely and accurate dissemination of information.

Training

  • Coordinate the training of Sustainable Agriculture Division managers and Sustainable Agriculture Division operations/administrative staff in policies and procedures; and
  • Ensure that Sustainable Agriculture Division managers train their teams in their Division-related responsibilities as well as policies and procedures.

Planning, Evaluation & Research

  • Coordinate the annual and 3-year planning process, ensuring Sustainable Agriculture Division activities are aligned with staffing and system needs, and budgets; and
  • Monitor the effectiveness of the implementation of the Sustainable Agriculture Division’s strategic plan, including the measurement of performance and fosters cross-integration of strategic directions, goals, and initiatives between offices and divisions.

Liaison with Human Resources

  • Liaise with Human Resources by submitting all job descriptions/position announcements and new hire request forms on behalf of the Sustainable Agriculture Division and in accordance with Human Resources policies and procedures;
  • Provide Sustainable Agriculture Division approval for all new hire requests submitted by the Division in accordance with budget;
  • Guided by Human Resource, determine the salary level of new hires;
  • Communicate with Human Resources regarding current and future recruitments; and
  • Other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications: 
  • Bachelors degree in Business Administration;
  • Minimum of 7 years work experience; at least 5 years of similar managerial level work environment;
  • Familiarity with a multi-office, multi-national organizational environment;
  • Experience in business operations, HR practices, supervising, and training methods;
  • Strong planning, analytical, and project management skills, with ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously while adhering to deadlines;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English;
  • Ability to travel 20 percent of the time; and
  • Strong computer skills (e.g., word processing, spreadsheet and presentations).
Salary: 

Commensurate with experience.
