This role calls for a Research Scientist with expertise in mammalian physiology and metabolism at the molecular level, with well developed molecular biology laboratory skills and an integrative systems biology focus. The appointee will work across CSIRO Themes 1021 "Breed Engineering" and 1045 "Transforming the Animal and its Products". The successful applicant will contribute to a diverse research portfolio including molecular genetics, physiological genomics, developmental and systems biology and meat science. The central aim is to transform commercially important livestock with modern bioscience technologies. The research scientist will be responsible for leading a small team in livestock physiology and metabolism research, whose goal is to generate and interpret post-genomics data sets (e.g. genome sequence, high-throughput expression data) in a rigorous, quantitative metabolic context. The key biological questions will relate to identifying mechanisms for improving energetic efficiency for a greener livestock industry, given concerns over food security and resource utilization and the coupling between efficiency and product quality. The applicant will have demonstrated capacity to synthesise and integrate life science data from multiple levels of biological organization. Experience in systems biology (particularly gene regulatory networks and genome-scale metabolic networks) will be advantageous. The applicant will be motivated by delivery to industry as well as publication in the peer-reviewed literature.
