Location: This post will have a base in either Peterborough or Aberdeen. JNCC has adopted a hybrid working approach, allowing colleagues to benefit from time in the office, with the flexibility also to work from home. Employees are expected to work from our office base or at external meetings or events for 1 – 2 days a month as a minimum, this will vary by team and the exact balance will depend on the nature of your role. JNCC has a pivotal role working with the four countries of the UK to understand the different approaches, share experiences across the countries and ensure best use is made of JNCC’s evidence sources to ensure a ‘high nature, low carbon’ approach. An important part of JNCC’s core role has been assessing change in national biodiversity through a range of citizen science species surveillance schemes and, more recently, developing the capability to use Earth Observation data to assess change in habitats. However, there is now a huge opportunity to expand this capability to detect more localised change such as the impact of specific interventions both to assess effectiveness of policies and improve models of broader change. The post holder will lead this area of work. They will work to build a good overview of the requirements and opportunities and direct how the methods and analytical techniques can be developed to meet these to provide cost effective change detection at local scales and ensure the outputs can be integrated within other processes and systems. They will be responsible for developing and maintaining the funding to support the work, working closely with the four country governments and their agencies. Much of the delivery will be through bilateral funding with individual country governments where the post holder will need to ensure robust project management to ensure transparent delivery.
