As an NREL point-of-contact, this advanced-level program management/project leader position deals with moderate to high-impact programs and/or projects. This leader directs, organizes, and develops program/project work while providing advice in support of center, office, laboratory, and DOE/customer priorities.
Team Leader for NREL Licensing staff. Mentors/oversees all licensing transactions and coordinates the activities of the licensing team.
Recommends intellectual property protection and commercialization strategies. Develops and maintains knowledge of applicable markets for all NREL technologies.
Evaluates early stage inventions for the commercial potential of new intellectual property.
Negotiate license agreements. Develops the licensing leads for promising NREL technologies. Coordinates the marketing strategies for all technologies. Develops market-based valuations for NREL technologies. Leads the negotiation of business terms for licenses to NREL technology. Coordinates the review of license agreements with NREL legal office to ensure terms are legally sufficient. Negotiates license terms with potential licensees.
Lead efforts to enhance NREL's licensing processes. Contribute to NREL's commercialization leadership and visibility by participating in professional societies, the DOE Technology Transfer Working Group, and industry outreach activities.
Provides financial oversight for the licensing team budget, license revenue accounts and NREL’s external patent budget. Budget responsibility exceeds $3M.
Provides oversight and coordination of the NREL Privately Funded Technology Transfer Program.
Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 14 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Or, relevant Master's Degree and 12 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Or, relevant PhD and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Or, relevant JD and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.
Applies advanced technical principles, theories and concepts. Contributes to the development of new principles and concepts. Develops advanced concepts, techniques and standards. Develops new applications based on professional principles and theories. Viewed externally as subject matter expert in field.

Comprehensive and advanced knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Superior leadership, project management and problem solving skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.
Successful candidate will have a combination of technical and business degrees plus extensive experience as a technologist and a licensing professional. Experience as Registered Patent Agent is desired.
Demonstrated abilities managing moderately complex, high-impact projects. Demonstrated abilities in developing new concepts and approaches where little or no precedents exist. Excellent ability to market and negotiate programs/projects with customer(s). Competence in program/project management and financial planning. Ability to make decisions and work independently. Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, communication, and teaming skills. National level of recognition in area of expertise and/or demonstrated advanced knowledge of deployment projects for pertinent technologies.
