WWF (http://wwf.panda.org/) is one of the world’s largest and most respected independent conservation organizations, acting locally through a network of over 90 offices in over 40 countries around the world. To achieve this, WWF is working with its many partners to save biodiversity, and reduce humanity’s impact on natural habitats.

I. Mission of the Initiative: The Global Climate and Energy Initiative works to promote national action and international agreement towards a credible, fair and ambitious global climate regime that sets the world on a path to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% below 1990 levels by 2050. To this end, the Initiative will include:

Intensive national-level efforts to promote low carbon development especially in the energy sector in key countries and thereby pave their way into a credible, fair and ambitious global climate regime. These efforts would focus on the largest emitters;

A concerted global advocacy effort, in the UN negotiations and other fora, including high level engagement with business in support of climate regulation and with active engagement with vulnerable developing countries;

The global partnerships and communications efforts necessary to underpin these advocacy efforts.

II. Major Functions:

Leads the WWF network in this initiative, orchestrating intensive national efforts in key countries and spearheading international advocacy and partnerships.

Provides dynamic leadership to the WWF network in the development and implementation of WWF’s highest profile engagement on climate change, and guides technical and policy interventions both at national level in key economies and at the global level to help create the basis for a credible, fair and ambitious global climate regime.

III. Major Duties and Responsibilities:

• Directs strategic development and implementation of WWF’s global initiative for tackling the climate change challenges the world is facing today;

• Guides policy formulation, lobbying and negotiation on climate change issues, nationally as well as internationally in key policy fora;

• Leads WWF delegations at international conventions and meetings, and acts as a spokesperson in international media;

• Guides and coordinates the work of teams in key countries, securing the strategic links between work to promote low carbon development nationally and the establishment of international policy frameworks around this work

• Sets the policy and partnerships framework to promote, enhance and magnify the goals set by the Global Climate and Energy Initiative, working through a strong, united WWF team;

• Defines and advises the WWF network on key “transformational strategies” in preparing for key national or international events, shaping global climate policy;
• Builds and manages a global and multidisciplinary team across the WWF network;
• Assigns roles and effectively manages a multimillion Euro budget and complex international programme; s/he will be responsible and accountable for proper, wise and strategic use of these funds;

• Develops strategic alliances with business and industry to promote a credible, fair and ambitious global climate regime;

• Works with WWF programme communicators to develop campaign approaches as necessary, and communication outreach to support the Initiative’s objectives.

Working Relationships:

Internal - Works closely with the WWF network’s Global Climate Initiative Steering Group and other relevant WWF offices, as well as other relevant Initiative Leaders and programmes. Coordinates closely the WWF Network, the Conservation and Marketing Committees.

External - Works closely with implementing and donor partners (bilateral and multilateral), government representatives, as well as climate convention officials.

IV. Profile:

Required Qualifications

• Advanced degree or equivalent work experience in political, social and/or relevant environmental or, natural sciences;

• 10-15 years experience in relevant environmental and development fields, including lobbying and negotiation of international agreements.

Required Skills and Competencies

• The background and credibility to be a respected voice in the climate change fora and debates, and have excellent knowledge of climate and energy issues;

• Excellent campaigning and communications skills;

• Strong negotiating and lobbying skills learned in either NGO, governmental, or business environments;

• Proven ability to provide strategic direction and overall political framing based on sound analysis of international politics

• Experience in raising and mobilising funding;

• Proven success in leading and inspiring global, multicultural teams and building strong team spirit, while drawing on individual team members strengths to collectively deliver on goals;
• Excellent command of English; other languages relevant to places of Initiative implementation an asset;
