Overview:

To provide an ecology advice, assessment and management planning service for projects likely to be funded externally for the Foundation and its subsidiary bodies. This will include BNG and or other projects we are doing with external funding. This element is covered at risk by the North devon Biosphere Foundation for the first year, thereafter we are confident that there will be enough commissioned work to fulfil the 0.7 FTE.

Research, Development & Brokerage

  • Undertake baseline ecological assessments compliant with the BNG regulations for a range of landowners at the request of the Biosphere Foundation and its Natural Captial Marketplace Team
  • Ecological surveys of land, demonstration sites, woods, coastal and marine, nature & rewilding sites etc in projects related to other programmes.

Reporting, evaluation and monitoring:

  • Provide ecological benchmarking data to measure biodiversity change against throughout the project
  • Provide correctly formatted reports for BNG funding or other formats as required
  • Design and manage systems for monitoring project progress around biodiversity to report to funders, and for communities to monitor beyond the end of the project
  • Create, and save data in appropriate formats including GIS
  • Provide support for the creation and management of a North devon UNESCO Biosphere-wide habitat and species database.

4: Experience, Qualifications & Knowledge

Experience Essential/ Desirable

  • At least 2 years practical ecological experience post degree
  • Experience in youth or community engagement
  • Working knowledge of BNG assessment process
  • GIS experience
  • Evidence of timely reporting
  • Experience of working within a team environment

Qualifications

  • Degree in ecology or similar related science
  • Associate member or full member of a suitable professional institute e.g. CIEEM

Knowledge

  • A good understanding of current biodiversity and climate change issues
  • A degree or higher (or equivalent experience) in a related field
  • A good understanding of current issues affecting sustainable land and water management
  • Understanding of safeguarding regulations

Skills

  • Excellent verbal and communication skills across wide audiences
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, able to adapt to different settings and personalities
  • Good IT skills
  • Good presentation skills

Personal Qualities

  • Infectious enthusiasm for engaging young people and communities with nature and how they can recover their biodiversity
  • Self-motivated, with minimal supervision needed and a drive to deliver
  • Flexible can-do attitude, willing to go the extra mile
  • Great communication skills and passionate to engage with people
  • Regular travel to communities and land managers across Northern Devon, so must have own transport
  • Creative thinker able to adapt positively to changing project landscape
  • Post holder will be expected to engage with the activities of community groups across Northern Devon so must be willing to undertake evening and weekend work as a core element of delivery

5: Terms of Employment

The role will be PAYE, joining the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere Foundation team, at the following rates of recuperation, including pension:

Year 4 £

28 days holiday [this includes the statutory minimum holiday entitlement of 20 days, to which 8 days public and bank holidays have been added]

Flexible home working mixed with regular office days based in Taw View, Barnstaple

Laptop and IT support will be provided
