Latin America Campaigner

The Environmental Investigation Agency, a 501(c)(3) non-profit advocacy organization based in Washington DC, is seeking a motivated, organized and committed campaigner to join one of the most dynamic advocacy teams in Washington today.

EIA’s Forest Campaign documents and exposes illegal logging, deforestation and associated trade and supports civil society organizations engaged in forest governance reform around the world. EIA uses primary evidence obtained from in-depth research of illegal timber and deforestation commodity trade flows to push for systemic policy shifts to stem the demand and funding for these illegal activities.

Position Description

EIA-US is looking for a talented and highly motivated campaigner to join our Forest Campaign’s Latin America team. This person will dedicate their energy, creativity and talent to halt forest crimes, strengthen land rights and combat deforestation, building upon more than fifteen years of successful work in the region; with particular focus on Peru, Colombia, Brazil and Mexico.

Main Activities and Responsibilities

• In close collaboration with the Latin America Program Manager and the Forest team, develop and implement innovative strategies to halt illegal logging and deforestation, and improve forest governance in Latin America.
• In collaboration with civil society organizations in the region, conduct analyses of forest, land and agricultural policy, design policy reform strategies, and advocate for change.
• Develop and cultivate relationships with government and enforcement officials, CSOs, industry representatives and other stakeholders in the region and in key consuming countries.
• Conduct in-country fieldwork and data analysis to help gather information and evidence related to forest crimes and associated supply chains.
• Draft analytical reports, research papers and briefings, press releases, newsletters, blog posts, social media and website content.
• Support advocacy work for environmental and land defenders. *Work closely with local partners to implement joint strategies in the region

Essential Expertise and Qualifications

• At least 2 years of relevant experience in advocacy and campaigns at the national or international level (related to Latin America or the Amazon Region).
• Background or experience in environmental policy, business, finance, economics, supply chain management, procurement and/or international trade policy in Latin America.
• Strong demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, in particular a collaborative and cooperative approach to work, as well as an ability to network and to build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of people across a variety of settings and cultural backgrounds.
• Ability to work with a high degree of autonomy, pay close attention to detail, and handle confidential information appropriately. *Fluency in Spanish and English is required for this position; Portuguese desirable.
• Ability and willingness to travel.
• Authorized to work legally in the United States on a full-time basis.

Desirable Skills

• Prior working experience or knowledge of the forest sector, timber supply chains, and/or agricultural commodities.
• Experience with databases, trade network analysis, or other relevant analytical software programs.
• Experience working with journalists and media to advance campaign objectives.
• Previous experience working or traveling abroad, additional languages a plus.

Compensation and Location

Compensation is commensurate with experience. This position is based in Washington DC with frequent travel to Latin America required. EIA is an equal opportunity employer.
