Start Date: Mid-February 2020

Lang Tengah Turtle Watch (LTTW) was founded as a conservation organisation in 2013 with ambition and drive, and the aim to help save sea turtles from extinction, based on the East Coast of Malaysia. Lang Tengah Turtle Watch is looking for a passionate and dedicated individual, who already has some experience in the conservation sector and is looking to take on a managerial role at our island-based project, off the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

You will be living on the job site - eating, sleeping and working in our jungle camp with our team of volunteers and project staff.  Your main role will be to become a fully integrated team member, which may include, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Overseeing the day to day running of camp, including scheduling and volunteer management
  • Coral research and monitoring (including scheduling research and liaising with hotels/dive centres to organise diving)
  • Training and managing long term research assistants to help in the coral research and monitoring
  • Ensuring volunteer wellbeing
  • Sharing associated administration tasks - accounts, data entry,
  • Liaising with the Project Co-ordinator about scheduling and ensuring they are kept updated on all developments
  • Sending weekly updates to other project sites with up to date developments on LT
  • Patrolling Beaches at night for nesting turtles
  • Taking morphometric data from nesting turtle mothers
  • Tagging turtles using metal tags and taking photographs of turtle facial scutes
  • Monitoring turtle nests and recording egg/hatchling data
  • Training volunteers in all the aspects mentioned above
  • Taking volunteers on leisure excursions (jungle trekking, snorkelling, kayaking)
  • Ensuring the smooth running of the camp, assisting volunteers and making sure all camp chores are carried out daily
  • Liaising with the resort staff and management on the island
  • Giving informative talks to resort guests about sea turtles, conservation and the organisation
  • Helping with our recycling programme and coordinating school visits
  • Updating our Social Media pages

Please note that you will not be solely responsible for these tasks, and will be co-managing the project site alongside another permanent member of staff and an intern. This is a great opportunity to get involved with a small organisation that is growing rapidly.

In previous seasons, the project also expanded to include fish and coral ID and restoration work, and this is something we are eager to continue in 2020. Diving qualifications and previous dive experience as essential in allowing us to continue this work.

Ideally, you should be fit enough to undertake daily leisure activities and must be:

  • Holding a related bachelors degree, or higher.
  • Outgoing: this is one of the most important elements, as you will representing the organisation to volunteers, resort staff and tourists on a daily basis
  • Experience in volunteer management
  • Organised
  • Culturally sensitive
  • A confident swimmer
  • Physically fit, and able to work long hours
  • Well acquainted with the rigours of outdoor living
  • Flexible:  our daily routine can alter depending on multiple factors and being able to adapt to this is essential
  • Fluent in English
  • Have practical conservation experience (preferably in a remote environment)
  • Certified in Emergency First Aid Response or equivalent
  • Able to duck dive to 10 meters and hold your breath for 45 seconds
  • Open Water Diver

The following criteria are also desirable for potential applicants:

  • Experience in sea turtle conservation work

There will be a two-month probation period during which you will be given an allowance each month and subjected to performance reviews. After this time, providing your probation period has been successful, there will be the opportunity to join the team as a full time, salaried staff member. Food and accommodation costs whilst on site, as well as in-country road travel to and from project sites will also be covered. You will be living in the camp alongside our other team members and volunteers. Conditions on camp are basic, so you need to be comfortable with living in this environment, and you will have a 5D4N break from the island every 4 weeks. Although you will be based at our island project site there may also be opportunities to visit other project sites during the season. The season runs from mid-February until the end of October.

If you feel you’re the right person to be part of our young, passionate and dynamic team of conservationists, please send through a copy of your C.V., a cover letter and details of two referees to our Project Coordinator, Bella: bella@langtengahturtlewatch.org

This is a great opportunity to get involved with a small, growing organisation where your work has the chance to have a real impact on the success of the project, whilst having the opportunity to contribute to shaping the future of the project.
