Most of our land holding is raw water catchment land which is managed to protect water quality and storage for affordable, safe and resilient public supplies.
As a member of the Land Management Strategic Planning Team, the Land Asset Manager will play a pivotal role in creating land management plans, putting water quality first whilst integrating multiple strategic objectives including; biodiversity, woodland creation, nature recovery, climate change and renewable energy opportunities.

- Influence and support the development of company policies and strategies to deliver key land related priorities including Biodiversity Net Gain and carbon emissions reductions.
- Create land management plans for all our rural estates, with a strong focus on water quality resilience and integrating multiple strategic objectives for biodiversity, nature recovery and climate change.
- Work with the company’s strategy, planning and delivery teams to understand the capability of the company’s land holdings to deliver biodiversity enhancements (including net gain units) and carbon emissions reductions and reflect this in the land management plans.
- Responsible for the identification of land for renewable energy opportunities, facilitating robust assessments for water quality protection and trade-offs with other value chains.
- Play a key role in land use change assessments and governance to deliver new opportunities as part of the land management plans.
- Work closely with the company’s land agents to ensure plans are aligned with those across the company’s tenanted estates.
- Lead the process and analysis of land risks, developing plans and recommendations to manage these, including the company’s disused sites.
- Work with the wider asset management team to create integrated land management plans across the company’s operational sites.
- Collaborate with internal Land and Estates teams to support the delivery of these land management plans, in particular the woodland teams for woodland creation and partnership teams delivering nature recovery with environmental NGO’s.
- Represent United Utilities at external meetings with a range of stakeholders including regulators, Local Authorities, Utility companies, accreditation bodies and associated industry organisations.
What you’ll bring:
We’re looking for someone who is qualified to degree level (or equivalent) or hold similar level of experience with experience in conservation / environmental land management, as well as have:
- Working knowledge of land management policy, strategy and regulation
- Knowledge of emerging land management value assessments for biodiversity, ecosystem services and carbon.
- Experience of land planning with a variety of statutory designations, including SSSIs.
- Good business acumen and experience of creating sustainable business plans in a land based context with environmental and social value impact.
- Experience in the production and delivery of Estate and Land management plans
- Experience of collaborative working with both internal and external stakeholders and partner organisations
- Good understanding of Microsoft Office and GIS systems
