Title | Jamaican Boa Field Assistants (2) |
Posted |
Description |
The Jamaican Boa, listed as Vulnerable on the ICUN Red List, is the largest native predator in Jamaica yet very little is known about its basic ecology. Habitat loss, non-native species, and human persecution are the greatest threats to this valuable species. This research aims to find out about the boas habitat preferences, home ranges, and movements. Assistants will track snakes using radio-telemetry and collect data for habitat assessments. The opportunity to participate in community and school presentations will be available if interested. Assistants will work 4-5 days per week, depending on the weather and the snake behaviors. You will have a Bachelor’s degree in wildlife, zoology, ecology or a related field or some related coursework. Experience using radio-telemetry, GPS, and collecting scientific data is very helpful but not required; a good attitude and willingness to learn new skills is just as important. Candidates must be in excellent physical shape and have a lot of patience as the field conditions can be challenging. Candidates should be comfortable climbing steep, rocky hills, working in hot, humid environments, and able to handle lots of mosquitoes. Minimum commitment of three months is required. This is a voluntary position. Successful applicants must purchase their own airfare to Montego Bay, Jamaica, and pay for their own food, lodging, on-island travel, and leisure activities. Accommodation is available at the research center for $35 per night. Meals are also available for $5, $10, and $15 for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, respectively. The research center is located three miles from the nearest taxi stop although taxis will come to pick you up for an additional charge. Falmouth (approximately 20 minutes from Sherwood) is the nearest town with a large grocery store and there are quite a few beaches in that area. The study runs through July 2010 and the positions are open until filled. To apply send a resume, cover letter, official or unofficial transcript, and three references to Erika Miersma at erika.miersma@gmail.com with “Field Assistant Application” in the subject line. |
