We’re the environment’s best kept secret. Established in 1991, we’re the UK’s statutory adviser on issues affecting the natural environment across the UK and internationally. Our primary role is advising all four Governments of the UK. With most of our work being within Government, our public profile is low but our impact is high.

What’s the role?

As an IT and Information Management Support Officer you’ll work, as part of a small but highly experienced team, monitoring and maintaining the computer systems and networks of the JNCC as well as working closely with the Information Management teamlet.

You will be working within first or second-line support installing and configuring computer systems, diagnosing hardware and software faults and solving technical and applications problems for staff, either over the phone or in person as well as helping to monitor, manage and develop the JNCC Microsoft 365 environment. Working with the Information Management teamlet, you’ll provide technical support to implement and maintain information management polices as well as the day-to-day collection, management, preservation and delivery of information to the target audience. The work is as much about understanding how information systems are used as applying technical knowledge related to computer hardware or software.

Post Duties

You'll be responsible, as part of a Team, for the smooth running of computer systems and ensuring that users get maximum benefits from them. Individual tasks vary depending on needs.

• Install and configure computer hardware operating systems and applications

• Monitor and maintain computer systems and networks

• Talk staff through a series of actions, either face-to-face or over the phone, to help set up systems or resolve issues

• Troubleshoot system and network problems, diagnosing and solving hardware or software faults

• Provide support, including procedural documentation and relevant reports

• Support the roll-out of new applications

• Set up new users' accounts and profiles and deal with password issues

• Respond within agreed time limits to technical calls logged through the IT help desk system, prioritising these were appropriate

• Test and evaluate new technology, either individually or as part of broader projects

• Liaise between Information Management and IT to support technical delivery of the Microsoft 365 roll out project.

• Work closely with the information management specialist to support information management requirements within the Microsoft 365 environment.

• Support staff with new ways of working within the Microsoft 365 environment

Technical skills

  • Understanding of Exchange and Active Directory objects such as Distribution List, User Domain accounts, Service Accounts, etc.
  • Experience in Identifying, troubleshooting, and resolving user requests/incidents
  • Excellent communication skills with some experience of writing guidance and/or training material on technical subjects for a mainly non-technical audience.
  • At least one year’s experience of working with a range of Microsoft 365 services
  • 1-2 Years’ experience of working in an IT department and preferably in a help-desk or technical support environment
  • A general understanding of information management
  • Experience of researching user needs to identify technologies to fit business requirements
