Internship Medicinal, aromatic & food plants of southern Africa March – August 2009 Data Management, Pretoria Closing date: 16 February 2009 SANBI is offering an internship position to contribute towards ongoing research projects. Applicants should be black South Africans, either completing their BSc Honours or MSc degree, and should be interested in gaining practical experience in research. No prior working experience is required but good grades at university will be a distinct advantage. The intern will be responsible for capturing scientific descriptions, preparing distribution maps using GIS, capturing and editing common and scientific plant names, scanning in images, and doing literature and internet searches of medicinal, aromatic and food plants of southern Africa. Interns will also be taught methods of extracting information out of scientific databases, and basic database structure and function. Essential skills: computer literacy, strong sense of accuracy, eye for detail, willingness to learn, and an ability to concentrate for long periods of time. Botany as a third-year major subject is a requirement. The monthly stipend offered depends on qualification, with a minimum of R4 500 offered at BSc level. We will need proof from your university that you have passed all the necessary requirements of the degree.
