Description

We’re the environment’s best kept secret. Established in 1991, we’re the UK’s statutory adviser on issues affecting the natural environment across the UK and internationally. Our primary role is advising all four Governments of the UK. With most of our work being within Government, our public profile is low but our impact is high.

What’s the role?

JNCC has an ambitious work programme on marine protected areas (MPAs) in line with the UK Government’s aim “to recover and protect the richness of our marine environment and wildlife through the development of a strong, ecologically coherent and well managed network of marine protected areas”. JNCC, as statutory advisors on nature conservation to the UK Government and the Devolved Administrations, provide specialist advice on MPAs in UK offshore waters to help the UK meet its international obligations and national objectives to establish an MPA network.

Due to our strong track record in the delivery of expert advice on MPAs domestically, JNCC have been successful in securing work to provide technical assistance overseas on country-determined aspects of MPA identification, implementation, assessment and management. Delivery is in collaboration with expert input from other Government Arms-Length Bodies (the Centre for the Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science – Cefas, and the Marine Management Organisation – MMO primarily).

As the International MPA Lead Specialist at JNCC, you will be responsible for the leadership and overall delivery of JNCC’s overseas technical assistance work on MPAs, managing a small dedicated team and cooperating and collaborating with key staff in Cefas, the MMO and Defra to maximise the ‘on-the-ground’ impact from planned delivery activities. You will also be responsible for ensuring cohesion of our MPA work with the wider international marine portfolio of work that JNCC delivers through our International Advice and International Implementation Teams and with progress of our work on MPAs domestically within the UK.

Job description

Post Duties

The successful candidate will be expected to:

• Provide overall strategic and technical leadership for JNCC’s delivery of overseas technical assistance work on MPAs

• Communicate and collaborate effectively with key staff across Cefas, the MMO and Defra in the first instance to ensure technical assistance delivery is well aligned to policy and technical priorities

• Effectively manage a small team of staff dedicated to the delivery of overseas technical assistance work on MPAs, facilitating opportunities for staff development and progression

• Perform Grade 7 level corporate responsibilities within JNCC, including (but not limited to) financial management, team leadership, corporate planning and servicing requests from our Executive Leadership Team comprising JNCC’s Directors and our CEO

• Ensure cohesion of our MPA work with the wider international marine portfolio of work that JNCC delivers through our International Advice and International Implementation Teams and with progress of our work on MPAs domestically within the UK
