Description

The Fellow will perform research, review policy papers and reports, compile data, and participate in developing funding strategies. S/he will also oversee postings of public funding opportunities and may be involved in the writing and editing of government proposals. The Fellow will play an integral role in supporting the team’s efforts to expand fundraising opportunities with public institutions in order to secure field staff’s positions. Through finding resources, s/he will contribute to preserving the world’s most important species and ecosystems.

  • Dates: May – August, 2012
  • 30 – 37.5 hours/week
  • Department: New Business Development – Development and Communications
  • Location: Rare’s central office in Arlington, VA (Court House)

 Areas of Responsibility
The Fellow will provide high-quality support to the team’s public funding landscape project through:

  • Researching websites, reports, studies, etc. for information on development agencies’ funding strategies, institutions and framework, priority themes and geographic areas.
  • Creating graphs, tables, maps, and presentation materials.
  • Working closely with the New Business Development team, s/he will participate in analyzing key findings and developing public funding strategies.

 In addition to the project, the Fellow’s responsibilities will include:

  • Overseeing daily postings of public funding updates; scanning, assessing and summarizing potential opportunities and liaising with Rare’s international staff.
  • Participating in writing and editing government proposals (as needed).

 Qualifications, Skills & Core Competencies Required

  • Must possess or be in the process of obtaining a Master’s degree in international development, conservation, international relations, or a related field
  • Outstanding research skills; preference given to candidates with prior research experience
  • Native or near-native written and spoken English language skills required; fluent French and/or Spanish language skills strongly preferred
  • Well organized, self-motivated, and able to work independently
  • Proficiency with MS Word, MS Excel and PowerPoint required; experience with databases a plus
  • Demonstrated interest in international development and/or conservation/environmental issues through coursework, volunteer or work experience, or extracurricular activities
  • Interest in or experience with bilateral and / or multilateral aid agencies a plus

Academic Credit and Compensation
Rare offers paid fellowship positions to eligible International Service Program participants in its Arlington office.
 
Current university students are encouraged to make arrangements to receive academic credit for their work at Rare, and we will make every effort to accommodate the requirements of credit-earning internships.
